Australia Lookups completed / Re: Darlinghurst Gaol/Gladesville Asylum

Hi, I am researching the fate of men who were convicted of machine breaking during the 1830 Swing Riots in Basildon, Berkshire. Thanks to your query, I now know a little more about Thomas. As you noted, he did die at the Gladesville Asylum and I suspect he was buried there.  Here is a link to the Asylum  Memorial.  I hope it helps. https://nswmentalhealthcommission.com.au/community/gladesville-hospital-cemetery-memorial/gladesville-hospital-cemetery-names

Hello again, sorry to take so long to get back to you Helen. I've tried to send you a photo of Jasper with his second wife and all his children but the file is too large.

I'm not sure that I got your PM.....

Rosemary

How about that! I descend from Dorothy Isabel, Jasper's eldest daughter from his second marriage to Harriet Ann Greig. My grandmother left me some lovely photos which I would be happy to share with you. I have a public family tree on Ancestry as well.

Jasper Stewart is my great grandfather. He became a farmer and landowner in Canterbury, New Zealand and died a wealthy man. Not bad going from where he began! I believe that he was only 14 when he emigrated to NZ as a shepherd.
Helen Stewart's mother, Agnes, registered his birth. A year later a James Stark declared his paternity of the child. Jasper was living with his grandparents in 1871.
I, too, have failed to sort out what happened to his parents - did they marry? I am leaning toward not.
