Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Re: Benton's of Littleport
« on: Thursday 23 October 14 22:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Sorry for late reply been on Holiday

Thanks for your note, I'm still on the list but I have not followed up things from the thread, I really should have the marriage certificate to determine the parents of 1837.

The Littleport Registers have been searched  but are inconclusive I'm told, so may be coming up against a brick wall. Possibly in another Church although  church registers as listed and copied  are not too clear, Maybe too many Benton's to follow, certainly later in the late 1800's there were some large families.

Regards

Roy

Huntingdonshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1891 and 1901 census Greenwood

Hope you don't mind me dropping in on the posting. Sometimes when looking you find something of interest.

I have an interest in the Greenwood families and Mills families as Ada was a very distant relative sharing a relative back with myself to 1774 when my first Mills ancestor was recorded. However some Mills females married into Greenwood families in Ramsey where Greenwood is a very popular family name. However not this one.

I wonder what happened to Ada Ellen Mills b 1893 (the year her father died) in later life?

Thanks for the attempt to help,

Unfortunately that hasn't worked.

The previous reply had guided me to the census records at St Patricks Hill. I'm sure that my Marion Horne was a servant to an English Family and in the postcard of 1908 from Cork she shows the address. It is the house of interest which would give me the family she perhaps worked for or who were in residence.

The house's name is "Edmonton" St Patricks Hill Cork

Many thanks for the advice

Hi again, It looks as I will need the Marriage certificate for Isaac and Mary to determine  Isaac's father. For on checking the Cambridgeshire registers the Isaac and Susanna parents have just three children on the Cambs Birth Index for Benton and they are are all listed on the 1841 census. Unless someone has the Littleport church registers to look up in 1837 which could show the father of Isaac. It seems strange that there is no reference to another Isaac birth about 1820 on the registers, but the fact that Mark Benton has an Isaac on the census shows that I need to cover another line of investigation to find the birth father of this Isaac

Still will sort out in the near future

Many thanks to all of you for the help and advice

Hi again and thanks for the messages however the thread by Bedfordshire Boy on the Bentons; previously sent out has caused me to rethink about Mark Benton and father of Isaac Benton who I know from tracking the Census records is the line I require.

But there are two Isaac Bentons on the 1841 census and one lives with his father in Ely and the one I'm following is in Littleport. So I come back to the Littleport registers and perhaps they are not listed in the Cambridgeshire records.

I have a Isaac Benton marrying Oct-Dec 1837a Mary Amiger which fits as they were having children until 1864 (at least 9) including Mark born 1854.

There must have been Isaac Benton born around 1818 probably in Littleport, which aren't for some listed although on the Cambridgeshire birth records.

So need access to the church records of Littleport to confirm if there were christenings  and marriages around this time Census records show on HO107/77/13 both Isaac Bentons the elder with his wife Susanna and four children living two doors away.

Help again

Thanks to both of you for the information. I can now see that  Isaac son of Mark moved out to live close to his fathers brother (Isaac) in Littleport. just need to check if Mark Benton is on the 1841 census with his wife Catherine.

Does someone have access to the 1841 census for them?

Now need a marriage of Mark and Margaret prior to 1783 probably in Ely or it's surrounds.

Surprisingly there are still some Benton's around the area descended from Mark Benton married  prior to 1783.

How far do the records go back for the Holy Trinity Church in Ely?

Thanks again

Roy

That was quick, Bedfordshireboy many thanks

Yes I have a birth of Isaac Benton in 1819 to a Mark and Catherine Benton, so I have my answer. Checking on the census indexes I have the family in the 1841 and 1851 although living in Ely. Isaac has married and moved to Littleport in 1841.

So the next question is Where did Mark and Catherine get Married and when was Mark born and where? Somewhere in Ely I presume? His age in the 1841 census is 50, so must be just after 1791

Looking to trace the registers at Littleport near Ely. Tracing the Family back through the census records to 1841 and I have a Isaac Benton  aged 20 with his wife Mary married in 1837 aged 18 I think according to the census records.with two children already. I need to find his father whether it was another Isaac Benton or a Mark Benton, together with any brothers. If anyone can help with the registers of the Littleport Church to put the family back I would be very pleased. It is possible that it could be Isaac Benton as another Isaac lived just two doors away in the 1841 census

Thanks for both of the messages, Having looked through the links you kindly gave me it still doesn't give me the family she may have stayed there with. I know she was a servant and I hoped to confirm the name of the family that may have taken her over to Ireland with them. I wonder if there is a house in Cork named Edmonton close by to St Patrick's Hill

Perhaps Wishful thinking!!!!!!!!!!
