You need to look which has better coverage of the area you are in

I paid for both top tier Ancestry and FindMyPast about 2 years ago and aside from the 1939 register, most of the records for my family (I'm from up North) were either on both or just on Ancestry. Once I had exhausted the 1939 Register I didn't really touch FindMyPast. I tried subscribing again for a month earlier this year but never used it except for random London school records for 1 person in my family. The 1939 Register is now on Ancestry.

I tend to stick to Ancestry now, except for the random forays into FindMyPast.

There is an agreement with many countries that companies with a certain number of transactions have to register and take out the tax of the receiving country for goods and services. However in the case of MacKiev they do have UK offices. ...

Not exactly. Since January 1st 2015, a 2003 EU directive started to be enforced strictly. Non-EU businesses are absolutely required to collect and pay VAT on digital goods sold to EU customers even if they are wholly based outside the EU. This closed the loophole that used to exist whereby VAT was charged based on the location a business is registered (so 0% for non-European businesses). Non-EU companies must now charge VAT based on the location of the customer.

Whilst I am slightly biased as I'm getting a free upgrade due to buying FTM post the Mackiev purchase, this isn't Mackievs fault really. It is Ancestry's for removing TreeSync.

You cannot expect the new owner Mackiev to create a new method of syncing and give it away to legacy users who didn't pay them for FTM (you would have paid Ancestry when they owned FTM back then). I paid Mackiev directly and they rewarded me by giving me a free upgrade. Same way RootMagic can give their new sync away for free as you paid them. Unfortunately legacy software cannot be kept going forever.

But at a cost... see existing thread

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=767963.0

It is only at cost if you bought it off Ancestry before Mackiev purchased it last year. I bought it from Mackiev and I have a free upgrade. Software doesn't last forever and plus it is only £29.99 to upgrade at the moment.

Ah ok, My grandad died in 1981, so i guess they would have been destroyed by now :(

I would say, have a punt and see what you get. The worst they could say is they have none.

I used to work for a council's Central Records, which also stored some NHS records. There were tons from years past the destruction date as we didn't have the staff or budget to destroy them. Some authorities have memorandums on not destroying any historical files, even if they have a policy of destroying them. Yes, it was 1980's but you could be surprised.

I personally have a number of social care records about myself as a child which will not be officially destroyed until around 2103 (100 years after my 18th birthday).

Technical Help / Re: Linking Ancestry to MacKiev FTM

You do not unlink the tree as the poster says above. They clearly say just update it 'as is'. I updated it without unlinking and it worked perfect. Much faster now.

Apparently, if you are logged in and use this link or this link then click subscribe you should get a Ancestry secret offer... according to Last Cousin.

Here is a picture of a benchmark on a wall (from Wikipedia). Same symbol as the map.

I obviously used Quidco to try get some extra money back too.

Hi,

Can you tell us what 'Quidco' is please & how it works?

Annie

Quidco is a cash back website (see Money Saving Expert for better explanation and I would recommend you do if you ever try). If you activate the site then buy something after a month or two you get a rebate back on a percentage offered.

Currently Ancestry offer 27% rebate on subscriptions via this method. So later this year I should get about £24 or so back off the £89.99. It isn't always guaranteed but when I bought FindMyPast last year, I got £46 back.
