Thank you so, so much for taking the time to transcribe AND translate this for me  ;D Good to know I was reading it correctly. I really, really, appreciate your help!  :)

I have a Canterbury Marriage Licence Register entry from 1723 - I can read some, but not all of it - mostly because of the script. I have enough Latin to understand at least a little, but hope to include a full transcription in my Source. I know everyone is busy right now, so am happy to wait for help.

The entry in question is for Keele and Gardiner.

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Family History Beginners Board / Re: family search website - reliable?

There are, however, some records that are only viewable at Family Search Affiliate Libraries and/or FamilySearch Centres. I imagine there are some FamilySearch Affiliate Libraries in Ireland to help with that, and there must be at least a few FS Centres.

"I can't see the documents,  I'm from Ireland"

People from Ireland can use FamilySearch.  It is freely available to everyone.  You have to register but it costs nothing.  FamilySearch is run by the LDS Church, but don't worry, they never pester you with religious junk.  You can register here:

https://www.familysearch.org/en/home/portal/

Once you have done so, go to search records.  You can choose the country or the type. of record (census, bmd, military, etc.).  FamilySearch isn't particularly good for Irish records but, who knows, maybe some of your people went to North America.

It was ever thus. I too have seen people enumerated multiple times on censuses.

I think its clear not everyone followed these instructions fhtess1165, given i can place some relatives in 3 places and other relatives not listed at all, even allowing for families with people in them with the same name.

The 1939 Register WAS taken on a fixed date - 29 Sep 1939, as per TNA's guide:

https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/1939-register/#2-when-and-why-the-register-was-compiled

The Streatham News had an article on its front page on September 29, 1939, explaining that it was that evening the head of household was to record all the people who spent the night there that night. You can see the clipping here:

https://www.findmypast.co.uk/image-share/162cb9ce-c70e-4ecf-b1a0-50bdae93f2cd

Many other newspapers had similar articles.

Now, whether or not everyone followed the instructions is debatable, but the Register was meant to reflect who was in each household on September 29.

Unfortunately the forms are not dated so we don't know which was completed first and they obviously did not have a 'fixed' date like a census.  We can only assume what the circumstances were.  Just think how many times we find people enumerated more than once on a census, it was not unusual.

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry - residence now placed after death event
« on: Wednesday 03 July 24 16:29 BST (UK)  »
An Ancestry staff member gave me this link this morning when I contacted them using FB Messenger:

https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/article/Providing-Feedback-About-Ancestry

I used to make enquiries using the e-mail address

ancestrysupport@ancestry.co.uk

but this is no longer available.

The support link

https://support.ancestry.co.uk/s/

leads only to static informaton and a 'virtual assistant' called Leif.

Is Facebook the only way to make contact with a member of Ancestry staff?

Cool! Glad you were able to find what you needed!

In Canada it went from $7.49/mo to $12.99/mo ... very annoying and no note that the lower price was a limited time offer.

Whatever currency you pay in after doing the conversion it looks like they have decided it will mean $10 into their account. Not forgetting that's on top of the records sub needed before they even offer pro tools.

It seems the most interesting ones were chosen...the one I need, was never reported on :( I did a ton of browsing at for whatever reason, no-one thought it exciting enough to cover.

Hi quite often they are in local newspapers which can be found on various sites - Ancestry/FindMyPast /British historical newspapers online etc.
