London and Middlesex / Re: Where was David Wait born?
« on: Monday 13 October 25 09:31 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks, Goldie61, yes, I do know quite a lot about David Wait. He was a Carpenter and lived in New Inn Street in Shoreditch, born about 1737. His first four children were baptised in London Wall Scottish Church, as was James Wait, a cooper who might have been a brother/cousin. But I can't find a baptism of David. I have worked through James, who was born in 1741. David, his wife Eleanor and James were buried in the Dissenters' graveyard at Bunhill Fields in 1793. So, I believe they definitely have Scottish connections, but need the baptism of David in about 1737.

London and Middlesex / Where was David Wait born?

I’ve hit a particularly stubborn brick wall in researching my 6x great-grandfather, David Wait (c. 1737–1793). The earliest record I’ve found places him in Spitalfields, Middlesex, where he married Eleanor Rice at Christ Church in 1763.

Their first four children were baptised at the Scotch Church, London Wall, before the Scottish congregation by Rev. Robert Lawson. In 1765, David and Eleanor were witnesses at the marriage of James Wait, a cooper, and Margaret Mather, whose children were also baptised at the same church. This close connection raises the question — was James perhaps David’s brother?

All three — David, Eleanor, and James — were buried at Bunhill Fields Nonconformist Burial Ground, further suggesting a family link.

I have gathered quite a bit more information about David, but despite extensive searches across the UK, I’ve been unable to locate a baptism record for him. I’d be very grateful for any fresh ideas, leads, or advice on where to look next.

Many thanks, ShaunJ, so I presume the date is 8th July 1917, which fits the publication in the local paper being in August.

World War One / Frederick John Rowett mentioned in Despatches
« on: Friday 11 April 25 10:00 BST (UK)  »
I appreciate this is a difficult one. I am trying to find some information on a Frederick John Rowett from Devonport (1866-1951). He became a chief stoker in the Royal Navy and had a long record of which I have information. But surprisingly a relative has found the small remains of a newspaper article, she believes from the Kentish Mercury that states he was mentioned in despatches. We have no date other than it was in August. I would appreciate any help in trying to find some more information.

Thank you so much!, LizzieL, coombs, Brodie, and amondg, for all your kind help. James Wait/e left a will; he was a successful brandy merchant, but he doesn't mention David Wait.

Coombs, I have looked at the witnesses at David's marriage to Eleanor Rice in 1763. They were James Wood and William Brodie. Brodie certainly does sound Scottish, and intriguingly, a William Brodie was baptised in Edrom, Berwickshire, just 3 miles from a family of well-established Waits in Chirnside. But at the moment, I can't find a David Wait/e that fits.

James Wood, the other witness to the marriage, has quite a common name around Middlesex. There are two that stand out. A James Wood, born in St. Martin in The Fields, is recorded in the marriage bonds as marrying a Ruth Wilcox at that church. His signature is similar to the one on David's marriage and St. Martin in the Fields, according to the author of Scotophobia, was popular with the early Scottish settlers. Thanks once again for all your kind help. I will have to keep chipping away!

David Wait/e was buried in 1793 at Bunhill Fields Non-Conformist Cemetery at the age of 55. He worked as a carpenter in New Inn Street, Shoreditch. Although he married at Christchurch Spitalfields, most of his children were baptised at the Scottish Congregation at London Wall Church. David and his wife served as witnesses to the marriage of James Wait/e, a cooper who later became a brandy merchant. James also resided in New Inn Street for a time and had his children baptised at London Wall Scots Church. Like David, James was buried at Bunhill Fields. Could they have been brothers?

Despite extensive searching, I’ve been unable to find a birth or baptism record for David, either in Scotland or elsewhere. Does anyone have suggestions on additional sources or strategies to explore further?

Hi Nairobi,

I am currently researching the ancestry of a school friend, Tina Gould. William John Gould (1836-1869) was her Great Great Grandfather. But, I am unable to access the two articles about his marriage and death in the Indian Times and wondered if you can help me ?

Thank you so much for your help and advice with this enquiry Bookbox. I did find the mention of David Wait appearing before the Kings Bench in the London Gazette and this prompted my eagerness to find out more.

I will now need to find someone to search those archives at Kew.

Many thanks for your kind help.
