Hi Bill nice to hear from you (we must be distant cousins)! I’d agree with your line of thinking, there is nothing official to link the family line to the noble Stewarts.

In fact (forgive me if you already know about this) the royal/noble Stewart families have been had their male line DNA markers recorded (there are articles online about this) and I can tell you that my own Y DNA matches with a male line descendant of David Stuart I mentioned in my last post, and neither of us have the Royal/Noble markers.

It is still possible there was a false paternity event somewhere between our common ancestor (estimated a generation or two before David) and the noble Stewarts but this is just as likely as not being related to them at all in the male line. Frankly this DNA test categorically rules out the Earl of Moray as his father.

Of course at this stage most people with Scottish ancestry will be related to them but just not through a a direct male line…

Hopefully some records emerge in the coming years to clear up some questions. Unfortunately a great deal of parish records in Britain do not survive from the time.

Hi, aware this is an old thread but through Y-DNA testing on FamilytreeDNA I have discovered I share the male line with a descendant of Rev. David Stuart. The distant cousin of mine has since passed away but I have been in contact with a relative of his. According to FTDNA's estimations, David's father or possibly grandfather is our shared common ancestor. Trying to do some more digging but the name of David's father remains elusive. My line stayed in Scotland and can be currently traced with accuracy to the late 1700s.

Hi Norrie,

Might be a bit of a long shot, looking for an ancestor of mine, James McDonald. He was born around 1784 and died in Buckhaven in 1842, though lived in East Wemyss for a time. His wife Janet (nee Hamilton) died in Buckhaven in 1873. I'm not too hopeful of a stone existing as she was listed as a pauper on her death certificate. The only other thing I have to go on is that his daughter Mary was buried in Methilmill but no stone exists (as you were kind enough to check some time ago).

Ross.

Hello,

I was wondering if anybody could help me locate where some of my ancestors are buried? My great-great grandfather Roderick Stewart died in East Wemyss in 1933, and his wife Helen (maiden name Smith) died there in 1940.

My great-great-great grandfather also Roderick Stewart died in 1885 in Buckhaven, however I'm aware his wife Mary (maiden name McDonald) died in 1860 and was buried in Methilmill

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ross
