I've been told by a descendant that there were some Army people there, but it'll take a while to get hold of their ancestors service record. They  dont  know the regiment, just the service number.  I'm interested in any other people who were present, sounds like there would not have been many. I'm guessing maybe engineers or something like that.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA Query

Provide them with as much information as you can on your family tree. I find it much easier to work on ancestry and you could encourage your relative to test and set up a tree there, if they have not already done so.

If any of my trees is wrong and I'm politely given the evidence I change it. I dont do so if someone just says you've got the wrong information in your tree and provides nothing to back it up.

IME thrulines are pretty good for close matches and progressively less useful the further back you go. Back to 1790 and I dont trust my own trees, records can be scanty then.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Shared 18% DNA
« on: Friday 22 March 24 15:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hello Tracey.

The first thing to do is draw up your own family tree.  Putin as much detail as you can so any brothers and sisters you have and your grandparents names, dates of birth and place of birth if you know it. It may be  that one of your ancestors had a child or children you dont know about, possibly from your grandfather's first wife.

I mainly use ancestry so I dont know much about My Heritage, if that is who you used. There are Facebook pages for people who help solve DNA mysteries, there is one called DNA detectives uk.

Armed Forces / Army units in Sri LAnka in July 1959

I'd like to be able to find information on people in the Army who were based on Sri Lanka in July 1959 - but have no idea where to start looking. Anyone got a clue on which regiments might have had people there?

Buteshire / Re: Robert Mclean born 1846 Rothesay

I'd guess someone misread the handwriting and recorded Hector as Peter on the one entry. However that Margaret would be too young.

Yes  unfortunately I cannot find any likely record of a Margaret Campbell or a Margaret McLean having married a McTaggart.

By looking at the record of Robert's second marriage I have discovered Margaret Campbell was still alive in 1885, although Donald McLean is recorded as deceased. Margaret is recorded as remarried to a McTaggart.

Robert probably believed his parents to have been married but something funny was going on.
