Wicklow / Re: The Hughs family of County Wicklow
« on: Thursday 14 March 19 02:49 GMT (UK)  »
Dear Shane and RedHugh,

I am excited to reach out here to you. RedHugh, we are DNA matches.. 4/5th cousins on Ancestry. I am thinking we may be connected through your Hughes/ Wicklow - James Hughes' line - his father James Hughes married to Eleonor Kerevan of Killaveny.

Here's what I know -- my great x2 grandfather was Matthew Hughes of Ballysallagh, Hackettstown, Carlow. He married my great x2 grandmother in Killaveny - Mary Byrne.  I don't know his parents - not listed / no found records.  I have Matthew's marriage cert and death cert. b. about 1821 d 21 Sept 1891. No know burial location. I've worked with a local Carlow-based genealogist and exhausted as much as I could (we think) and the DNA let me here.

Matthew and Mary had 4 known children - Thomas b 1846, Peter b. 1848-d 1922 (NY), Susan b 1851, Margaret, b 1856.   Peter was my great grandfather.. emmigrated to New York - Brooklyn.

RedHugh, I am trying to find the link between my Matthew Hughes and your James Hughes (Snr) b. abt 1785- married to Eleanor Kerevan.  I am wondering if James was his father, Eleanor his mother.  .  . and if Matthew is another sibling of James b 1806, Patrick b 1815. John Peter b. 1839, Mary b.?

Shane might you have any ideas here?  I find it interesting that the name Susan shows up as my Matthew's daughter, and the name Susan is repeated a few times in RedHugh's tree (descendants of James Hughes 1785). And Matthew marries in Killaveny before living in Ballysallagh when the kids are born by 1846 a lead? And the name Thomas repeats.

I'd love to finally find the birth record of Matthew Hughs abt 1821 somewhere! Been searching for many years.. feet on the ground in Ballysallagh, through Hackettstown.  I visited the church in Killaveny where he and my great x2 grandmother married.

I look forward to hearing from you both.. and Thanks in advance :)  Veronica

Thank you so much. This does help a lot - mostly to confirm the information I've found. I have Mary Cavanagh's (nee Doody, Coopersmith) death cert and her parents are listed as John Doody and Mary White, and her birthday as March 30 1855. It's the 1875 US census that shows they're living with Bridget, Henry her husband, George Doody, and Bridget and George's mom Catherine.

Unfortunately I have no other information on them.   I've searched and examined everything I can here and there's been no lead other than Bridget's marriage in Athy.

Could there be a baptismal record for Mary Doody in the COI records - to parents, John Doody/ Mary White?  For that I'd need to know exact parish or even townland, right?

Thanks again!:-)

Thanks, Richard.   I understand people living can't be shared abut publically but I thought a private message is ok. No?

Kildare / Doodys of Athy Kildare?
« on: Tuesday 08 March 16 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am related to Bridget (Brigia or Bella) Doody who married Henry Williams 29 Apr 1867 • Dist of Athy, Co of Kildare.  Her mother was Catharine (nee?) Doody and father, Mathew Doody.  She had a brother George.  My direct ancestor is Mary Doody Coopersmith.  I am not sure how Mary is related to Bridget and the rest, but I know she is, given that all lived together in the same flat in Brooklyn NY after arriving in the US.  I am taking a trip to Ireland and would love to solve a few mysteries about the Doodys in my ancestry.  And if anyone knows a living Doody in Athy I'd love to get in touch (PM me please).  Thank you.
