I take it that this is your family history ?

Tara

I've looked today and to my surprise there was all of these replies!

Tara to answer your question - They are my relatives.  I think I may have tracked the Harper family to England but I can't provide details until I access Ancestry again.

I had never seen that write up - there are several.  My gut feeling about the Kelly family (Ned) interactions with ours is that there is a possibility that someone in that family boarded or rented with them or there is a connection to Ned's sister Grace.

I haven't delved into it for a while.  The Hetherton family remain such a mystery in Ireland.  I appreciate any info that can progress our family tree.

I gave you a free suggestion which is typical of how people did it in Australia until tech took over.
Our government has given us limited access to particular records that you are perhaps not aware of.

Perhaps if you choose different wording as it appears as if you pounced after nearly 8 years to really rub it in that I have limited means.

Surely there must be a way of finding out without endless spending of money???
Unfortunately there is no way of getting this information without someone spending (or, if you are extremely lucky, someone already having spent) some money. And £1.50 is less than the cost of a cup of coffee or a half pint of beer.

Waiting 8 years to hammer your point has not sat well with me.  I have found other "free" means of finding out some details which will not be disclosed to you.  This does not include any of the replies to date.  I hope you have enjoyed yourself with your reply.  If there is a next time you attempt to reply in such a manner, I will be reporting it to the moderators.

Tyrone / Hetherton
« on: Wednesday 22 October 25 03:29 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any connection to the surname of Hetherton from the Tyrone area of Ireland in the early to mid 1800's?

i do realise the Hetherton could be a form of Hetherington. The records obtained so far all state Hetherton with Tyrone origins.

I have a John Hetherton born approx 1819 Tyrone  who marries approx 1840 to Susan Harper.

Any suggestions welcome.

Just the same as Scotland then.

Only it's a lot more expensive to get the actual certificate.

Your point is???  Picking the bones out of everything due to someone else's perception of affordability says a lot!

What makes it harder for me is I live in Australia

This is really intriguing. I would be very interested to know how to find out before ordering a marriage certificate from Australia whether I have the correct person. The online indexes to marriages in Australia don't contain any information at all about the people apart from their names. Just like the ones on Scotland's People, really.

The thing is, if I get it wrong on Scotland's People it's only £1.50 - less than the cost of a cup of coffee - but if I get it wrong in the corresponding government sites in Australia it is a far more expensive mistake.

Current charges seem to be AUS$20 in VIC, AUS$24 in WA, AUS$25.55 in QLD, AUS$26.40 in SA, and AUS$41 in NSW.  At today's exchange rates that's anything from almost four times as expensive to nearly eight times as expensive as a certificate from SP.

So, Oneday, please enlighten me how to be sure before coughing up for an Australian certificate that I have actually got the right one?

For Australian records I would look at the newspapers as a lot of people posted the announcements in those.  These records are free and quite often give other details.

Hi Jemima is my Dad's aunt. I have the Scotland Peoples certs etc for this Yorkstone family. If you are still looking for. Happy to share. I am also in Australia.

Thanks for your post.  I'm not sure if you can private message me until you have posted 2 more posts on the forum.  I would be happy to know some more details as it maybe if accurate that we could be distantly related.

Armed Forces / Re: Miners and Sappers from early 1800's

Thanks to all who have responded so far.  The person I am looking for is William Bowden/Boden.  He was sent to Australia in 1833/4 on board the James Laing as a convict after being found not on duty and drunk whilst serving in Ireland.  He is a long shot as William has been very difficult to find.

The family story has it that his parents are John and Ellen with William being born in 1818? Cheshire.  Both father and son were miners.

I had never considered this type of miner that is why it's a long shot.

Someone else also has this William dying in 1839 in Australia but being born around 1800 and a native of Cornwall.  If this is correct, he is not the right one.  My first idea is to see if I can find him or his father in the Military.  Let me know if you need any other details.

Armed Forces / Miners and Sappers from early 1800's

I would like to know what resources are available to find out who served in this part of the British Army in the early 1800's.  In particular it would include those who were posted to Ireland to do survey work.

I have searched some of the British Archives but I'm unsure of where else to look.

The date period would be between approx 1810 to 1835.

Any suggestions would be welcome.
