Tyrone / Hetherton
« on: Wednesday 22 October 25 03:29 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have any connection to the surname of Hetherton from the Tyrone area of Ireland in the early to mid 1800's?

i do realise the Hetherton could be a form of Hetherington. The records obtained so far all state Hetherton with Tyrone origins.

I have a John Hetherton born approx 1819 Tyrone  who marries approx 1840 to Susan Harper.

Any suggestions welcome.

Just the same as Scotland then.

Only it's a lot more expensive to get the actual certificate.

Your point is???  Picking the bones out of everything due to someone else's perception of affordability says a lot!

Surely there must be a way of finding out without endless spending of money???

What makes it harder for me is I live in Australia

This is really intriguing. I would be very interested to know how to find out before ordering a marriage certificate from Australia whether I have the correct person. The online indexes to marriages in Australia don't contain any information at all about the people apart from their names. Just like the ones on Scotland's People, really.

The thing is, if I get it wrong on Scotland's People it's only £1.50 - less than the cost of a cup of coffee - but if I get it wrong in the corresponding government sites in Australia it is a far more expensive mistake.

Current charges seem to be AUS$20 in VIC, AUS$24 in WA, AUS$25.55 in QLD, AUS$26.40 in SA, and AUS$41 in NSW.  At today's exchange rates that's anything from almost four times as expensive to nearly eight times as expensive as a certificate from SP.

So, Oneday, please enlighten me how to be sure before coughing up for an Australian certificate that I have actually got the right one?

For Australian records I would look at the newspapers as a lot of people posted the announcements in those.  These records are free and quite often give other details.

Hi Jemima is my Dad's aunt. I have the Scotland Peoples certs etc for this Yorkstone family. If you are still looking for. Happy to share. I am also in Australia.

Thanks for your post.  I'm not sure if you can private message me until you have posted 2 more posts on the forum.  I would be happy to know some more details as it maybe if accurate that we could be distantly related.

Armed Forces / Re: Miners and Sappers from early 1800's

Thanks to all who have responded so far.  The person I am looking for is William Bowden/Boden.  He was sent to Australia in 1833/4 on board the James Laing as a convict after being found not on duty and drunk whilst serving in Ireland.  He is a long shot as William has been very difficult to find.

The family story has it that his parents are John and Ellen with William being born in 1818? Cheshire.  Both father and son were miners.

I had never considered this type of miner that is why it's a long shot.

Someone else also has this William dying in 1839 in Australia but being born around 1800 and a native of Cornwall.  If this is correct, he is not the right one.  My first idea is to see if I can find him or his father in the Military.  Let me know if you need any other details.

I would like to know what resources are available to find out who served in this part of the British Army in the early 1800's.  In particular it would include those who were posted to Ireland to do survey work.

I have searched some of the British Archives but I'm unsure of where else to look.

The date period would be between approx 1810 to 1835.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Australia / Record name

I have found a record on a census record and would like to know what you interpret the name as.

The record name I'm after is no 16.  It has been recorded as William Bay****

If it helps at all -
Record no 13 & 14 first names are Thomas
Record no 17 is Patrick Murphy

I'd appreciate your interpretation of the writing.

But…
James is “connected with Birmingham thieves

https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=TNA%2FCCC%2FADM6%2F421%2F00091&parentid=TNA%2FCCC%2FADM6%2F421%2F9028

I can't seem to access those records.  I found another site https://www.genguide.co.uk/source/calendars-of-prisoners-crime-criminals/

This indicates under one of the lists available a William Cash was caught in the Handsworth area of Birmingham in 1823 at the age of 22.  This looks as if it is him.
The Staffordshire Advertiser has an item on the 8 Mar 1823 that mentions a William Cash.  I can't access the details.  This also looks like it is him.
Nothing for James.

James’ certificate of freedom record says he is a native of Devonshire
Does another record say he was from Birmingham?

His place of conviction was Warwickshire.  Majority of documents have this.  I can't explain why it states Devonshire and I've always wondered about it.
An earlier ticket of leave states his place of origin was "at sea".

The more I look into this pair the more differences I pick up.  Only 1 record of James mentions William coming about 6 years earlier.  The only thing I haven't looked up is if he had a different surname.
