Hi Margaret, No didnt get an unfinished reply.
Connie's death info very useful, what was her married name? I will look for Gerald..

I would love to see those photographs. I have nothing from Ambrose's side of the family, again due probably to James's early death.

You can send by email: (*)

I will send you a photo of Ambrose, to see if there are any family resemblances....

I intend going back to Kimberley to take better photographs of James and Lydia's grave. I will send those on also.

Let me know if there are any other graveyards worth searching. I carry a notebook with all churchyards of interest with me, so on my travels, if I get the chance I go and have a look. I get back to Nottinghamshire a couple of times a month....

thanks
Rob

Hi Margaret,

thanks for that, it did all make sense. No I hadn't got past Sarah Meakin, I havent done any research at any archives yet, was leaving that till later. I have visited a number of parishes, churchyards etc. There are some great sources of information online, no doubt not exhausted all those yet. Found the IGI batches probably most useful, plus the local parish sites.

Francis must have been wealthy as you say. Cossall was (and still is to a large degree) a very small village close to Trowell and Ilkeston. Of course less than a mile from Greasley and Kimberley.

My brother and I have red hair! always assumed that was my Mothers side...

I think Trowell is that one, it is so close to Cossall. I have not yet been to Trowell churchyard, I will make that a priority. There is a shortwood farm between Trowell and Cossall....

thanks
Rob

Hi Margaret no I hadn't seen the will.
Certainly heard no stories, but as Ambrose my grandad was somewhat distant from his family I'm not surprised. James dies when Ambrose was 9 and Hannah re-married so I guess they lost contact with the Thorley's... There was talk that James and Hannah had some houses and Ambrose rejected a gift of one of those houses from Hannah due to a falling out. Where the houses came from is anyones guess...
Any idea where Francis was buried in 1858? not in Cossall have looked there, but I do pass through the area frequently so could look for his grave..

Did the money go to our Samuel? Francis and Sarah had several children, James we know about, Sarah b 1809, Joseph b 1806, John b 1793, Samuel b 1796, Francis b 1790, William b 1801 and Hannah b 1788

Yes really useful Margaret. Thank you. I can give you the dates of the people in my previous posts if you don't have them?

I have Francis as b circa 1767, in Cossall, but cannot find where I got that from. So your 1762 in Ilkeston makes a lot of sense. Ilkeston is less than a mile from Cossall but in Derbyshire. Yes Francis and Sarah Meakin married on 7 Aug 1787 in Trowell.

James Frederick was a year younger than Benjamin. He married Hannah Morley in Mansfield on 11 Dec 1898. They had their only son, my grandfather, Ambrose on 1 July 1901. James was a Colliery Surveyor, but died young  in 1912, have not discovered the cause yet. Hannah re-married and my Dad remembered her well. As far as I'm aware, my Grandad didn't have any contact with his uncles and aunties. Ambrose married Maimie Harrison and had one son, my Dad, James Frederick. Ambrose died in 1981 of heart failure.

Its nice to know we have still have branches of the family going strong.

With that new information on Francis, I will see if I can dig anything else up.

regards
Rob

OK Margaret. Benjamin married Ada Hall?, I only have their info up to the 1911 census, at that stage they had only 4 children, Benjamin, Constance, Mabel and Gertrude.

I did trace  Samuel's Parents, James Thorley and Lydia Limb. James and Lydia are buried in Kimberley Churchyard, I have a photo of the headstone (although it had broken from the ground). James parents were Francis Thorley and Sarah Meakin.  Trail goes cold then I have been to Cossall but nothing to be found. Lydia's parents, Michael Limb and Ann Smedley. Michael was son of Samuel Limb and Jane Leivers. Ann was daughter of William Smedley and Rachel Hooley. Williams parents were George and Elizabeth I believe. Rachels were  Robert Hooley and Sarah Monson. Trail runs cold after Roberts parents, John and Mary.

Samuel and Sarahs son, James Frederick was my G Grandad, my Dad was named after him.

Hi Margaret, thats interesting, I had nothing on Benjamin as Ireland seems to be a grey area. As you have found the records just arent available. I do have the basics on Martha and Joseph, but again the trail goes cold, at least online. I will get to Staveley at some point to look further.
There are a lot of Derbyshire records online so have been surprised I cannot trace Joseph or Martha. If I remember right there are two Martha candidates born Staveley, so without any marriage details for Joseph and Martha I have come to a halt.

Benjamin and Sarah had 4 children I believe. Their daughter Sarah Ann married Samuel Thorley, an engine driver on the Railway. I have all the info from there.. Just frustrating that the Ireland records are not there.

thanks again
Rob

Hi Margaret, I would be interested in anything you have on Benjamin Trigg. He was my  GGG Grandfather.  He married Sarah Eliza Goodland  as you say in Rotherham 1841. I have lots of info, but virtually nothing on Benjamin or his ancestors..

Hi Salkeld,
Just read these posts and realised our searches are linked. My GGG Grandfather was Benjamin Trigg, a brush maker born in clonmel around 1820. He ended up in Sheffield by 1841. His daughter Sarah Ann Trigg was born in Staveley Derbyshire in 1846. I am guessing a brother of Richard? Other than a directory entry in Waterford as a brush maker I cannot find any irish records of Benjamin. Would be interested in any light you can shed on the brush making story.. All I ever heard from my grandfather was a vague rumour about some irish roots..
cheers
Rob
