Suffolk Lookup Requests / Re: Wetheringsett Marriage 1800-1813 ish
« on: Sunday 30 December 12 11:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Sparks,
don't know if this is any help at all, but I too am seeking info on a Mary Keely only my Mary married Thomas Nichols here in Norfolk (Bagthorpe) c 1802. Suffolk being "abroad" to us here in Norfolk is only 50 odd miles and we genealogists know how the ancients liked to travel. This would also explain why I can't find a birth for my Mary in Gods own county. So, could it be??

Your William Dow Stacey looks as though there is a clue:
Is he the son of John and Mariah who are boarders with Sarah in 1871?

you mention Mariah wife of John? sorry but John who? Stacey or Dow?

Thanks Heywood, it does look interesting, from your research I'm not sure where Mariah fits in? and Jolly is a completely new name to my tree.

Hi,
I too am chasing the mysterious Stacey family of King's Lynn, I know that William Dow Stacey married Louisa Leggett in 1891 and preceded to have 8 children but Williams past is shrouded (no pun intended) in mystery. Any help would be so much appreciated.

Thanks for that Bee...but just last evening a fellow Forumer in King's Lynn came up with this report...I have found the following account
SS TANGERMUENDE and the sinking of the EVENING STAR on the 21st of October 1905
The TANGERMUENDE was built in 1891 as the CRAGG by the Tyne Iron Ship Building Co., Yard Number 85 for Fisher Renwick & Co. Newcastle. She was a vessel of 666grt and measured 180ft length and 28ft beam and powered by a 3 cylinder triple expansion engine.
She was almost immediately taken over by the Lynn & Hamburg Steam Ship Co. Ltd., of King's Lynn, Norfolk, and renamed TANGERMUENDE.
The EVENING STAR was a wood ketch ( 2 masted sailing vessel similar to a yawl but with larger mizzen stepped well before the rudder ) built in 1873, registered in Hull and owned by a Mr. C Hartley of Norfolk who was also the Captain.
On the 21st October 1905 the EVENING STAR was on passage from King's Lynn with a cargo of wheat when she was in collision with the TANGERMUENDE during a Northerly Force 6. Captain Hartley and his cook went down with the ship but the 66 year old mate Harry Harrod managed to reach the shore but died from exhaustion.
Captain Leverett of the TANGERMUENDE stood trial on two counts of manslaughter but was aquitted of all charges.

Just what I was hoping for...xmas all over again!
Thanks :)
