Gysyroselee13 - Wow! What a connection! So we must be distant cousins?? I have William Henry living in Shardlow as a 'Cleaning Dept Labourer' in 1939... are you still local? Wow! This is exciting!

As for attaching the cert, when typing a message, there is a blue link 'attachments and other options', just select that and upload from your computer :)

Hi yes I am pretty sure as he and his not wife record themselves as allwoods in the 1901 census even though they don't marry and become allwoods until 1918. My Gt grandfather's dad was Henry Allwood but he didn't take his surname at birth as he was illigimate  so he was given his mother's surname 'holland'. That's the surname I still carry today. It is all very confusing but I am pretty sure he used an alias unless he had a brother I know nothing about that was given his dad's surname despite his mother not being married. Hope this makes sense!!

Seped shows parents as Henry and Mary Ann.

There is a Wilfred, March quarter 1909 and an Alfred in June quarter 1909 - same endings  ???

Your last post has confused me re Mary Ann. Do you have your lady with any children in 1901 and 1911?

Are the family listed as Allwood in 1901 with son Frederick b 1899 Derby?? :-\

They do indeed record themselves as 'Allwood' on the 1901 census - I know this as Mary Jane was born in 1902 at the same address listed on the 1901 census.... they then revert to calling themselves Mr & Mrs Holland on the 1911 census....

Would be so much easier if they kept the same name! :)

May Ann had four children registered with the surname Holland from 1899 - 1909. Frederick, Mary Jane, William Henry and Alfred.

Alfred was baptised 5th May 1909 at the same church that is listed for Seped. So my first thought was it has been transcribed wrong as i went to the Record Office to look at the baptism and there wasn't one on microfilm for Seped but there was for Alfred, and they are both on 5th May 1909.

Henry 'Holland' is the father of these four, however I believe his real name was 'Allwood' - the four kids above took Mary Ann's maiden name as she didn't marry Henry until 1918 -  well after the children were born.

I have only very recently come across Sapphire Holland's baptism, I wanted to investigate if she indeed belongs to my family, as her Mother has the same name. I know it might not be, but I wanted to prove that she either is or isn't.

Hope this makes more sense :-?

Thank you everyone, I'll look into that... it is actually possible that they took a different surname as Mary Ann (in my tree) did not marry until AFTER having all her children, so there was no father on any of the birth's.... they we're all given her maiden name. So I shall have a search under the surname 'Allwood' for these individuals. And also... Sophia rather than just Sapphire!

Sometime you just need a fresh pair of eyes to look at it!

Thanks everyone!

Derbyshire / Why can I only find a baptism record?
« on: Friday 19 February 16 12:45 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

Just wondered if anyone knew why I can locate a baptism record but not any other record?

For example; I have come across a baptism for a Sapphire Holland (b.1896) and a Seped Holland (b. 1909) both in Derbyshire, however, there is no other record relating to these individuals IE; No Birth/Death/Marriage.... nothing!!

Very puzzled... Can any shed any light?

Thanks

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: 1939 Register
« on: Friday 19 February 16 12:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have found the 1939 register very helpful - it has helped me identfy other family members through using the information on the 1939 register.

For example, a marriage between my gt uncle and his wife provided a vital clue as to who my gt Aunt had married as she was a witness at two of her brothers weddings. (I got his wife's name from the register and then searched for the marriage record and ordered the cert)

Another household helped me verify that I was looking at the right family - address in register matched death certificate address.

It also helped with identifying the actual DOB for some relatives and also helped me grow my tree because their children were showing on the register. I now have names of 'Holland' Relations that are still alive today through tracking of birth's with the surname Holland and the said mother's maiden name - although to track them I would have to use Facebook or such like as there are alive!
Although some actually come up on the electoral roll register results, from which I traced a gt aunt that is still alive today!!

I would definetly recommend it, just be sure you have some sort of clue that your unlocking the right household as it will get expensive if not!!

Happy Delving!

World War One / WW1 Service Record Help
« on: Wednesday 17 February 16 14:51 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I am having some trouble interpreting the writing on a WW1 service record for my gt grandfather, would anyone be able to help me please?

I know it says he was in the 53rd Sherwood Foresters and in the ajoining paperwork I have says he was a desserter at some point in 1919/1920. (He uses the name 'Harold Allwood' for this WW1 enlistment)

I know he later re-enlisted under his real name 'Frederick Holland' into the R.A.M.C in 1925 and re-engaged again in 1929, and again after that, eventually being called up for service.

Any help would be appreciated! And any ideas as to why he used an alias upon his very 1st enlistment in 1918?

Thank you!
Nikita
