"But Alice Ellen DID leave a Will. Hers may well be worth getting. Not being married she may well have named brothers, sisters, nephews and Nieces as beneficiaries".

Hi Liz,  Have got the copy of Alice Ellen's will now. Main points are:- (a) One hundred guineas to my sister Carrie Holbrook.   (b) Fifty guineas to my nephew Jim Holbrook.  (c) Ten guineas to my cousin Bertha Lacey.  (d) Five guineas to the son of my cousin Bertha Lacey, Gordon Lacey.
(e) Two guineas to Frank Lacey for the Red Hill Chapel.
The residue of my estate after payment of just debts, expenses and legacies to my sister Elizabeth Saxton for her own use and benefit absolutely.

No mention of her neice Sheila Sedivy nee Holbrook?  I am waiting now for the will of Elizabeth to see what it has to offer!

Hi,  you might find that contacting the library in Arbroath may be helpful.  When I was over there Looking for family records, I found the ladies there very helpful.
Good luck,  Mavowl

Hi Laurence,   May I ask what line of this family are you connected to?  I may have some information we can exchange?

Hi Debbie and Laurence,

I have been looking into a few Donegal McVitty policemen, and found the record of one you may be interested in.

Robert McVitty; age (when joined the R.I.C.) 24; native county Donegal; Religion P (Protestant); Omarried 11/12/1837; Co. of wife, Donegal; by whom recommended Thomas Atkinson Esq. J.P.; Trade or profession farmer; date of appointment 14 February 1828; To what County, Donegal; Promotions etc. Const. 1/9/1840; R to SC. 1/8/49; Pensioned1/12/1853; Pension £26; length of service 25yrs. 8 mths.

Have no idea what the abbreviations on the promotion bit means but I think there might be a problem - what was he doing between 1828 and 1840??!!

I am sure you will have checked the IGI but just in case there is a birth (1st June 1803) and death in Ballymore Donegal ( 1875) of Robert McVitty. I think that is your Robert and this is his son - birth for a Robert McVitty (parents Robert McVitty and Elizabeth McCrea) in Derry 1845. Ballymore is not that far from Derry.

To link the policeman, the dates sort of fit - if he was pensioned off at age 49 he may have been injured and died before 1875 when Elizabeth decided to emigrate with the children.

There is a Thomas Atkinson J.P. buried in St. Ann's Church of Ireland Ballyshannon. He lived in Cavangarden just up the road from where I was born.

I don't think this Robert is one of mine - there were two families but you never know. I knew Reids from Pettigo but back in the 70's, I have lost touch now.

My apologies if I have bored you with stuff you already have, its been some years since your last postings on this subject but it was worth a go!!

Carol.

Hi Carol,

Just found your McVitty items today as I only joined a week ago. You have answered some questions re Robert, husband of Elizabeth, so Thankyou very much. Do you know where he was buried please, and are there any existing census records available??

I am researching this family for a friend, and until recently Irish records were seemingly not that easy to find! Or maybe I didn't know where to look. Are you still living in Ireland?

Hi Carol
Just checked my posting from 2004 (where did that time go?) and I noticed your December 2008 posting on Robert McVitty!

Thank you so much for posting the information about Robert - he has been very elusive to date.  Now I have something more to go on!

Regards
Debbie in Australia

Hi Debbie,

I have just joined Rootschat a week ago for help searching for a missing member of my famil with great success.
Browsing this morning I came across the McVitty postings. I have been researching this family for a friend who comes down from William John McVitty. I had "lost" Catherine altogether so very pleased to see your post.  Can we exchange some information for the family?
Anna, also in Australia.

:) :) :)

Great team work!

mavowl-
Such a nice family to research.

Your group was/is pretty easy to find in 1881 on A*try.
Wildcards*** just using Fran* born 1879 (plus or minus 2) with father as Geo* and mother Mar* and keyword as Arnold. The HEATON bunch just had to be correct. (I can't blame the transcriber for that effort!). :)

Maureen

Hi Maureen,   Thanks for that advice, I have not done a search like that on A:try.  Must use it more often, may take out sub.  I am with FindMyPast, looked up the Heaton transcription and reported the faults.
