Caleb Stevens was born on 10 October 1842 at Winsford, Somerset.  I attach his Birth Certificate which shows his mother was Mary Stevens and father William Cotton.
His baptism record at Winsford on 22 January 1843 states his name as Caleb Cotton Stevens and his mother Mary Stevens, spinster of Winsford (no father's name)
On his marriage record at St James Taunton on 18 November 1868 to Jane Louise Peppin, his father's name is written as William Stevens.
I cannot find him on the 1851 or 1861 census.  He appears on 1871 census at Kingsbrompton (now Brompton Regis) saddler aged 28.
It is a mystery to the family where he was in 1851 and 1861, what happened to his mother Mary and who was William Cotton.
If anyone can shed any light on this I would be pleased to hear from them.

Would this be the same Sarah Schofield who married John Ingham Hunslet Mar Q 1851 and later Thomas Marsden Hunslet Dec Q 1860?

This could explain why Edward was with his grandparents on census night.  :)

I have just reached this point in researching a friend's tree and she has yet to order the certificates which might confirm this.  Sarah would be her 3G GM.

Cheers, Jane

Not sure at all but I am keen to find out. I don't know how to confirm.

I really want to know who Edwards (1844) father is?!!?
Cheers

Hi Tom
Thanks for that. A lesson learned - never assume anything in research!
My G Grandfather also married Henry's daughter - Harriet.

We are quite closely related then......my real, non-secret(!) name is Peter Schofield.

It goes Peter Schofield 1966,---Edward Schofield 1938,---William Schofield 1906,---William Schofield 1874,---Edward Schofield 1844,---Sarah Ann Schofield 1827,---Henry Schofield 1801

I can find no record of Francic jnr in 1861, although he married in 1862 (in Worcester Register Office). His occupation was given as an ironmonger's assistant on his marriage certificate, but I do not have the certificate to know the address given. I assume he lived in the Somerset area as his first two children were registered in Exeter in 1864 and 1866. Of the three Chorley children in Cutcombe School in 1851 none were with their parents in 1861. Brother William appears to have gone to London as a draper's assistant, later to be a commercial traveller.
Francic snr's address in 1861 was St. James' Cottage, Saint Sidwell with his occupation as landed proprietor and in 1871 he was living in Salem Place St. Sidwell with his occupation as retired farmer.

Hey!

If you look in the Somerset Record Office online catalogue there is a record of 1801 deeds to William Chorley of Exton, Yeoman concerning Exton common.

Hope you are near Taunton !!!
