Thank you! That is the correct family and that is what I found as well on ancestryUK.  My great grandfather was David Kirkland c1890.  His birth year is the only thing that I knew for sure.  I know Robert Kirkland (his father) died before my great grandfather came to the United States in 1906.

Perhaps he was at some point but the census record I found said coal miner in 1901. If we are even talking about the same family.

That is a different Robert & David Kirkland.  Robert Kirkland was a coal miner according to a census document and according to his son which is my Great Grandfather David Kirkland.  David Kirkland was born in Northern Ireland.  I know all the information on David Kirkland.  I just couldn't find the birth certificate for Robert Kirkland.  He was born in 1856 in Ireland and his mother's name was Kirkland but not his father's.

Mary Jane's last name was Cullen.  It was her husband Robert Kirkland that supposedly changed his last name and took his mother's maiden name. I can't find Robert Kirkland's birth certificate to verify this and the information that he changed his name was passed down from my Great Grandfather David Kirkland.  The reason for the name change was thought to be for a job but nobody knows for sure.

I know David Kirkland came to the United States in 1906 because he is my Great Grandfather.  They lived in Lanarkshire Scotland but my Great Grandfather was born in Northern Ireland. I think Robert Kirkland changed his last name (according to my Grandfather) if you are stuck.  He took his mother's maiden name because his father was Mcclain and Catholics weren't getting jobs.
