I would just like to thank everyone for taking the time and trouble to help me with Walter.  This time yesterday I was hitting my head against a brick wall and now I have such valuable information that I am raring to go to see what I can find.

PS never heard the name Evelina before

Derbyshire / Walter Barker - who is his wife?
« on: Tuesday 04 June 13 19:28 BST (UK)  »
I have come to a full stop on finding any information regarding Walter Barker and his family.  I know he had a daughter Joyce who was 17 when she married James Lewis in Chesterfield in 1934.  Her address was 14 Church Lane, Hackenthorpe, Beighton and the occupation of her father was Coal Miner.  One of the witnesses at the wedding was A. Barker but I do not know who this is.  I have been trying to find Joyce's birth and a marriage for Walter but nothing seems to tie up.  Any chance someone can help me?

I wonder if a death could be confirmed in South Africa? It is of Joyce Padfield (the name of her common law husband Idris Sydney Padfield. She may also have been known by her  married name of Lewis or her maiden name of Barker. She was born in Chesterfield in 1917.  She and Idris went to South Africa after 1961 ( I don't think there are passenger lists after 1960) to join her daughter and I know that Idris returned to the UK after Joyce's death.  He died in 2004.

Thank you for the information.  I had found Orange Farm but believed it to be a Township and therefore dismissed it.  I didn't realise that the major companies were there.  This is indeed promising and seems more plausible than my relatives working/owning an orange farm.

This is going to be very helpful.  Their occupations in the UK were, sales rep and she was an office worker.  She had studied art but did not continue with that career.

An old family rumour was they had something to do with an orange farm near Jo'burg
but the 'orange' part may have been the name of a place.

I have sent the email to SA as you suggested.

South Africa / Arrival Durban 1958 then where?

I am trying to trace what happened to two family members (man and wife, believed deceased) who travelled to Durban from Southampton on the Athlone Castle in February 1958.

Does anyone know if there are any accessible records relating to immigrant arrivals in South Africa at that time?

Hello!

Joseph's son Frank and my Francis are one of the same! Frank married Fanny Vallance and they had a son James b. 1913 who married Joyce Barker. I am trying to find out all I can about them and at the moment I haven't got very far! It is their grandson that I am doing the research for.

I'll continue with the research after the holidays.

Happy Christmas
