Thanks Kev. You're right, of course, embarrassed to have missed that! I suppose Dursley was so compelling, I forgot to do the obvious birth year cross-check.
 ;)

As mentioned before, I had her located in Wotton-Under-Edge in 1871 and 1881. Prompted by your post, happily I've now found her in Yatton, Somerset in 1891. And as a big bonus, that has also given me my first sighting since 1851 of of her sister, Mary Ann Pinnell. What's more, that's another branch of the tree: Mary Ann is married to James Denmead, a Grocer, b. abt 1842. Another source of cousins to pursue. So, turns out to be a lucky mistake after all - very glad you spotted it!
 :)

Still haven't found her death though...

Thanks Kev. Yes, Elizabeth is one of the Pinnells that I found a fair bit about, including 1851, 1871 and 1881 censuses. And I'm pretty sure this is her death:

Thanks Angela. East Grinstead Library has just local records, but I plan to check out Crawley (only 10 miles away) where there may be much larger archives.

I've been sort of working against the calendar in a sense. I plan to give my 87 year old Aunt Betty the beginnings of a family tree as a Christmas present. Apart from building the PINNELL, COTTRELL/COTTERILL and RATCHUS lines back a few generations, I'm also aiming to make a DVD including the tree and some nostalgic photos and a soundtrack that I hope will trigger a few happy memories. Authoring a DVD (I'm a relative novice at that too) is notoriously time-consuming, but family research has even that beaten!

Kev: If I definitely knew it was in that batch, that wouldn't be so bad! But that period was just my first 10 year guess  ;)

Liz: Yes, I'm looking forward to my first outing to the FRC. Only about 20 mins brisk walk to East Grinstead station, and then an hour by train to Victoria. But I want to get an extensive list of 'hard questions' prepared methodically first!

First, hope I'm in the appropriate forum - there doesn't appear to be one about 'Internet Searching' or 'Internet Resources'?

I'm new to this hobby (4 weeks), currently bulding trees for PINNELL and COTTRELL / COTTERILL. How do more experienced UK users set about finding the date of a death in the 1900-2000 period please? The FreeBMD facility is great up to around 1900, but then has very few entries transcribed.

I've been using the 1837online service recently (pay per view). But a major flaw IMO is the way it presents 'hits'. Searching on William Pinnell, to find his date of death somewhere in say a 10 year period, it presents a whole range of names, split over quarters.

I'd have to pay to view 40 sets of results in ranges like these

PINCHETTI, Pieri a - PLATT, Lily
PILE, William Harold - PLATT, Eliza
PINFOLD, Ada - PLOWS, James William
PILLATT, Christopher - PLATT, Frederick
etc

in order to see if any of them even contain a William Pinnell!

Thanks both. Just beginning to appreciate the potential complexity of this issue  ;)

For time being, with more of a twig than a tree to manage, I have no real problem anyway. But I just had an email about the subject from someone with 80,000 names in his database! Frightening to think what a mess that could get into without some consistent system.

My next step is to experiment with FTM 2006 to see how it copes with some of these alternative approaches. Unless I've missed it, I haven't found the issue covered in its Help documentation.

Thanks all, those replies were very helpful. Pleased to see it's a common issue.

Somewhere else in these archives I saw a recommendation to consistently use the surname on the birth certificate. That sounded a good idea to me - until I realised I didn't have the appropriate certificates.  ;)

I think I'll do the same as several respondents: stick to one name (in this case, COTTRELL, the name recognised by my living relatives), and use notes (or similar) to record the variations. Happily, I now see that FTM doesn't use the precise surname to maintain correct relationships throughout the generations.
