Hi Diddy
Many thanks for your response. Whereabout does your daughter and family live?  Has she been to Kawhia, where George Charleton eventually lived, from 1840 til his death in 1863. I live 70kms away.
I am now just getting used to searching the Durham records. For example I located the St Mungo Simonburn Records from 1760 onwards, sadly with many gaps,  but I was thrilled to locate the birth entry for Richard Charlton, bapt 7 May 1769. However I could not locate any of the seven siblings mentioned in his father 's Will -Thomas Carlton, [1714-1788].  So still looking for some of them.
I iwould love to receive a copy of your  Charlton files. My email is  stephenschollum@gmail.com
On other sites I was s.schollum@clear.net.nz, but that server discontinued service in 2015.
I do wonder if some people, seeing my postings, and wanting to help, have sent messages never to have heard back from me, and possibly being reluctant to reply  to other posters.
Regards  Stephen.   PS This research is turning up all sorts of places I am searching on line, and so, having looked them up, I am compiling a list of places to one day visit if and when I get back to
NBL.:)Eg, saw Black Bull Inn in Wark owned by a Charlton.   No doubt others

Thanks Diddy and JenB (again). I appreciate your assistance. Living half way around the world from NBL makes research very difficult, especially when one doesn't know the range of research tools available.  Just last night I chanced upon Bishops Transcripts for Northumberland, so found some new information. The search goes on.   I agree: too or so many Charltons and too many Matthew Charlton to select the right one.

Hi.  I chanced upon this thread. I   am searching for a Thomas Charton, bapt around 1714, possibly lived at Warkswood, NBL, [northwest of Walk]   as I  have his son, Richard, bapt  7 May 1769, son of Thomas and Mary [possibly Mary Eddy] Charlton, Place of abode: Warkswood.  I  have also located, in general terms, around this 1870 period, two other Charltons living at Warkswood:  John and Eleanor Charlton, and a James Charlton.   My tentative and unsubstantiated research suggests that Thomas, born c 1714 is the son of a Matthew Charlton, bc 1695;  this Matthew purportedly is the son of another Matthew.
It will be sincerely appreciated  if anyone can provide any additional information.

JenB  Many thanks again
Too many Charltons in Simonburn and Wark Cemeteries to make any direct connections to Warkswood Farm   yet!   Regards, Stephen

Hi  "Hat of the Cat"  and  "JenB"  for your prompt and most informative information and references. .   I have been searching my Charleton forebears from Elsdon (farms at East Toddles, West Toddles, Wiskershiel, Witless,  North Riding and Landshot)  for over 35 years, but only recently found the reference to  Wark Woods.  I recall even searching it as Warkwoods, but only found one reference to a plant at Warkwoods Estate, Newcastle Great Park.   Obviously I was not searching the applicable Maps, but, living down under,  I am unfamiliar with the range of historical maps to search. Therefore, all your links are much appreciated.
While we spell the name 'Charleton'  with the 'e', I certainly see references to the spelling 'Charlton.'   I am unsure  when and why the spelling changed.  One anecdotal story told two me was that the 'e' was included to indicate that the family was 'C of E'. Who knows?  The list of other Charlton family names provides more opportunities to explore, especially  for the  grandfather of Richard  Charleton,  [my 3x Great Grandfather] ,baptised & May 1769, son of Thomas Charleton. This information kindly provided by both of you has provided much valuable additions to my on-going research.
Thanks, Stephen Schollum, Cambridge, NZ

Hi All    I chanced upon this site when looking for the birthplace of my 3x great grandfather, Richard Charleton, baptised 7 May 1760, at St Mungo's Church, Simonburn, Northumberland, to parents Thomas and Mary {nee x?} Charleton. Their place of Abode was  "Warks Wood", hence searching this site.
Does anyone know where this "Warks Wood" is located? The assumption is that is is probably located  somewhere between Wark and Simonburn, but I would love to know.

Hi Shannon   I have been researching the George Charleton family since 1985, and have been back to Elsdon, Northumberland searching family records and places. I would be happy to fill in any 'gaps' you have regarding George's family

Hi Barry.  Just decided to revisit this site.  Somehow i Had thought that the site was discontinued.  Have you had any luck in locating any New Zealand Army Service for your forebear?  I live in Cambridge and there were approximately 600 Militiamen who received land grants in 1864 as part of their payment for military service in the New Zealand Land Wars, sometimes known as the Maori Land Wars.  My initial research identifies two Cambridge residents by the name of Oliver: Charles and Richard.  I can search out their details if this line looks interesting.

Many thanks for the reference and Link
I have now been told the Cemetery Plot number.  All I have to do is locate a map of the cemetery to see where the plot is located
