I have a photo of him in July of 1915 (his wedding) where he is in uniform. Unfortunately, we cannot see any clear detail of his shoulder badge. He definitely is wearing an RFA uniform, with the bandoleer and lanyard.

Hi Ken,

Thank you for deciphering these codes on the medals roll. I am interested in what your sources are for  interpreting the units associated with Moses Jones' regiment number.

I will have to visit the library to use Ancestry to check on whether a service record exists for Moses, but assuming the worst, it would be interesting to pursue other avenues of investigation on where he served.

Cheers,
-Chris

World War One / WWI Medals Mystery
« on: Monday 18 January 16 00:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm researching my ancestor Moses JONES, gunner with the RFA Territorial Force in WWI. I'm trying to find out more about his service, especially in which units he may have served and where he was overseas. Moses survived the war and emigrated to the USA in 1925.

From his MIC, there is some basic information (branch of service is the RFA, potential unit and regimental numbers) but no other useful information except that it appears his medals were returned.

I recently obtained his record from the WO329 Medal Rolls collection and there are cryptic comments that I have not found any reference to. I am hoping that those with more experience can help explain these.

Specifically, there is a comment "Rev. C RV/227B 07-4-8 23 K.R. 1743 ( 1912) 8136 ADT." The portion about the medals returned and destroyed under King's Regulation (1912) para. 1743 I understand. The "Rev. C RV/227B 07-4-8 23" part I do not.

Is it possible from any of this information to determine in which RFA unit Moses Jones served, and what was the issue? My next step will be to try and order his service records against regimental number 725430 but any other information I can provide would be greatly appreciated. I've attached both MIC and Medals Roll info as attachments.

Thanks in advance,
Chris Rau

Cardiff-

Unfortunately I don't have any solid information on him in his latter years. The story told to me by his granddaughter was that he left his wife at some point and didn't keep in contact with the family. He was rumoured to be interred at Strata Florida. My (limited) inquiries have not turned him up there, but since Ystrad Meurig is very close to Strata Florida, I thought that perhaps he might have returned to his hometown.

Also, I don't have a death date, which of course makes the whole investigation that much more difficult. It wouldn't be any fun researching Joneses without specific information  ::)

Thanks for your interest-
Chris

In 1901 he and his family were in Ystradyfodwg, Glamorgan. He was working in the mines at that point. He arrived in Pontypridd between 1881 and 1885, as he was married to Maria Smerdon on 31 August 1885.

Hello, I'm hoping that anyone with burials index access can look for-

Moses Jones, b. 21 Jun 1863 in Ystrad Meurig

He probably died after 1915. One account has him buried in Strata Florida cemetery, but I think that he's likely at his hometown.

Any assistance provided would be greatly appreciated - Chris

Hi Vanda,

A quick check on the 1841 England census has this family still living in Ashton-under-Lyne. FYI!

Tonight was LDS night, although it was cut short by a raging blizzard here in Michigan! 6-8 inches of snow by 6:00 am tomorrow... :P
Anyhow, here's the good news:

From the Ysbytty Ystwyth parish records--

Marriage Records, 1815:

John Jones & Elinor Thomas, married by banns on 24th of November 1815

Baptism Records, 1828:

#203 - Anne, daughter of John & Elinor Jones of Glannant, baptized 23 November 1828

This should help Janet!

And, for my own gratification...

#188 - Anne, daughter of Thomas & Jane Jones of Gwaryrhos, baptized 10 February 1828
(Dave, this is even more evidence that you were right with Thomas Jones/Jane Griffith]

D ap D - the records I have don't include Cwmystwyth, but they do go to 1875. I will try to locate your Thomas Jones after the holidays, next time I can visit the LDS...
