Dumfriesshire / Re: Francis Bell - Canonbie
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 11:52 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks.

As your Francis was born in 1815, and mine Ca 1805, I don't think there is a connection. (or at least they are different Francis)

Francis' full family is
Francis Bell, b Canonbie Ca 1805 +/- 1 or 2 years d 1894 Merthyr Tydfil
m Agnes Graham b 1812 d 1864 Shrewsbury
Children:
1. Walter Bell, b. 20 Dec 1837, Thrumpton, Nottinghamshire
2. James Bell, b. 1839, Scotland
3. Francis Bell, b. 1840, Fulham, London d bef 1847
4. Margaret Bell, b. 1844, Fulham, London
5. George Bell, b. 1845, Scotland
6. Francis Bell, b. 1847, Scotland
7. Jane Bell, b. 1850, Grinshill, Shropshire
8. John Bell, b. 1853, Shawbury, Shropshire

I have so far been totally unable to find any details for the Scottish births

I found the following Frith christenings in the IGI in Wales, Yorkshire. All have the father listed as George Frith

ALICE FRITH  - c 25 OCT 1742
WILLIAM FRITH - c 06 APR 1766
THOMAS FRITH - c 03 NOV 1748
MARY FRITH - c 11 MAR 1743
ELIZABETH FRITH - c 14 SEP 1746

'My' George (b 2 Oct 1760, Wales, Yorkshire) isn't listed here, but the data on George came from a family member who has researched this fairly deeply. So, it would appear thay my George and your Thomas are probably brothers.

Hi Cousin  :)

I have a George Frith in the same sort of time and place I estimate that he was born about 1730 but have no other details. He had a Son George in Red Hill, Wales, Yorkshire in 1760.

good source...

The average Scotlandwide assesment of 30% under-recording that they quote tallies with my estimate of 25% under-recording for Dumfries.

BTW for those searching on IGI, beware of indexes for some parishes e.g. Canonbie which appear to be female only. This isn't the case with Scotlandspeople.

Dumfriesshire / Coverage of Dumfriesshire OPR records

In the process of trying to find my ancestors in Canonbie, I came across this page http://www.ldscatalog.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/lds/50126000.jsp?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=106644&langId-1 which says that for Dumfriesshire there are 130,296 OPR birth/christening recordas and 83 marriage records in the British Vital Records index, which is based on the OPR and similar content to the IGI but excluding member submitted entries (which, without sources are not really useful)

The Dumfriesshire population in 1801 was 54,000.

The OPRs for Dumfries cover a period of approximately 120 years from mid-1700's to 1855 (dates vary by parish)

Based on an average lifespan in 1800 of 35 years, there should be approximately 185,000 births in this period so the OPRs seem to cover about 75% of the births for this period.

The big question is how complete is the index vis-a-vis the microfilmed records?

On marriages, the situation is much worse. Based on the English OPR totals,  one would expect the marriage total to be 25% of the births to we could expect there to have been 42,000 marriages in this period. So the coverage is just 0.07% !

BTW. This site gives some wonderful population and other data:

Food for thought...

Dumfriesshire / Francis Bell - Canonbie
« on: Monday 21 November 05 15:05 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find details for Francis Bell born Canonbie approx 1805 and some of his children:

James Bell b. abt 1839,
George Bell b. abt 1846,
Francis Bell b. abt 1848,

Francis' wife was Agnes Graham. They were in England in 1838, 1844, and 1850 for the birth of their children there and I have traced them in all censuses from 1851

neither Francis nor his children appear to be in the OPR indexes on scotlandspeople or IGI. Are there other registers that can be checked, if so, any chance of a lookup.

btw. there IS a Francis baptism entry for Canonbie in 1807, but I don't think it is the reght one.
