@Rosie99, thank you for looking. It took a lot of cross-checking but I've just discovered it was Alice Maud and not Alice Mary too. So I'm going to look into @Bookbox's suggestion.

@Bookbox, I've been working through each of the Alice Stevens' born between 1870 and 1880 in Hampshire, checking records and genealogy site sources to try to find 'my' Alice Stevens. I have a list of the Alice's and their parents names and relevant data to exclude them from my search.

I do owe you an apology. I saw on a family tree on My Heritage that Alice Mary had died in 1876, but it turns out it was actually Alice Maud, born in the June Quarter of 1873, and the source on the tree was out of date and incorrect. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sound like I was rejecting your help out of hand.

I do appreciate all the help given.

@Bookbox, Thank you, but that Alice died in 1876. The Alice I'm looking for was on the 1881 census.

Edwin Stevens and Nancy Gilbert (Crumpler) Stevens have seven children. All but one have a Christian name and a second name, one even has a third name. All but one have a Birth Registration, a baptism record and are registered on census returns. All except Alice. Alice is on the 1881 census, but that's it. I can't find a Birth registration for her, a baptism record for her and no death record that would align with her birth year of 1874. I've tried searching with Alice as a second name but still come up empty. I've tried just the parents' names and Alice comes up on the 1881 census, but that's it.

Could somebody please check to see if there's an Alice Stevens with mmn Crumpler born in or before 1874 in the Portsmouth area of Hampshire.?

Thank you.

@CaroleW, Thank you. No wonder I'm having so much trouble trying to find William and his mother. So Waby is the mmn. That's a start.   :)

6
@Mabel Bagshawe, Thank you for looking. So the surname goes from Waby to Selby to Sellerby, because of transcription errors  :o

@Rosie99, yes, that's right. I think he is with William Lusby in 1871, as Herman died in 1868. The 1871census shows a William Button with Sarah Eleanor and William Lusby in Holton le Clay.

@CaroleW, Oh... that's thrown me. Is there no birth with mmn Selby for a William Edward.?

9
@Rosie99, Ah, so it's Selby, not Sellerby. That makes things a little clearer. Thank you.
