Hi all,

I worked in the GO/Families Office from mid 61 until posted to Rheindahlen in Nov 63. I was the dark haired guy and it was me who was courting ? the NAAFI girl called Sylvia. My name was Jim Monkman and I came from Scotland. I was in the GO at the same time as Sgt Carthy and also the dark Cpl. There was also a chap called Neil ?,he wore glasses and came from Todmorden. Anybody remember ?. A WRAF called Gwen Nicholas also worked in the GO. She was also a good pal of Pam Smiths.

Many years ago and loads of memories, sadly fading with the years, nevertheless, it's good to talk with you all.

Cheers

Red Setter,

The Mullen girl must have arrived shortly before you did, 'cos I certainly remember her. I left for Rheindahlen in Nov 63. I easily remember this because, I was in my billet in Germany and writing to my wife to be when the news came on the radio that J F K had been shot.

How long were you in thje WRAFs?, and where are you living now ?.

Talk again.

For Red Setter,

Hi again, if you are Janet O'dell and was in the Gen Off at Haydock in 1961 - 1963, then we must have kniown/worked with each other. When did you arrive / leave Haydock ?.

I certainly remember the dark fellow, he was the Cpl in the Gen Off during my time there and before I was transferred to the Families Office. I can't think of his name, but you must have some memory to recall different places and people after all this time. This guy, as I recall had some sort of skin complaint on his face as he always seemed  to have the makings of a beard, can you remember this ?.
I also remember that, sometimes he was pleasant enough, but also could be a proper tyrant if stepped out of line.

I remember that, because I was in the HQ building, I was very often delegated as an escort for anybody up on a charge, was the CO's office down the corridor on the left ?.

I have forwarde the photos of yourself/ Pam on to my ex, will let youknow what she can remember.

Got to go now, look after yourself and keep them memories alive !.

Cheers

For Alexesian,

Thanks again for replying so rapidly. I've tried to recall the names you gave, but without any luck. I was only a young lad then and probably Cpls was away above my station !. I do recall a Cpl medic who was i/c the Medical Centre, I think his christian name was Dennis, can you recall this guy.

Yes, the Families Office was down the corridor from the general office, but I did a stint in the general office as well and Sgt Carthy was my boss. I was the leave clerk and also overseas movements. Do you remember a civilian girl who was a typist in the HQ, I think she may have had some connection with Gerry Marsden from the Pacemakers ?.

I can't remember Jan, again I'll ask my ex, she may remember her. When did both of you arrive/leave Haydock ?.

All for now, keep talking.

Cheers

For Alexesian & Red Setter,

Girls, it was great hearing from you both so soon and thanks a lot for the photos. I certainly recognise Pam Smith, she was there the same time as myself and, like I said was friendly with my ex wife. The Mullen girl I also remember, I think I may have worked in the Families Office at this time, but I think I left shortly after she arrived. Thanks also for jogging my memory about Sgt Carthy, Mick was his christian name and he was Irish. He was a lovely man and very considerate, if not a bit of a softy with the girls !.
I think I heard that he had died suddenly of a heart attack. If we know these folks, you must recall a shy wee scotsman who was difficult to understand because of his accent ?, that was me, I come from the Orkney Isles and was a lot quieter than than I am now !. I don't recognise anyone from the photos, but I'll forward them to the ex to see if she knows any of the faces. I also remember aguy from Todmorden called Neil (?), can't remember his surname, but he wore glasses and dare I say, a bit scruffy !.

Once again girls, thanks for the chat, I feel as if I know you both now.

Keep talking please.

Best regards

Alexesian,

Many thanks for reply. Was any of the girls you mentioned working in the General Office Irish ?, I think I can recall an Irish girl there. Was Ken Dodds fair haired guy with glasses ?, maybe even a wee bit pompous ?. Yes , I do recall that Maureen Liptrot was a local girl, she came from Ashton under Lyne I think. I don't think she worked in the HQ, I think it was in the Comcen.

I do recall that there was 2 WRAF officers in the HQ, maybe the ones I remember had gone before you got there.

My ex wife left for Freckleton shortly before I was posted to Rheindahlen in Nov 63. We weren't married then, but did get married in 1964. Are you in contact with Pam Smith?, 'cos I'm sure she'd remember her. She came from Preston.

Anyway, thanks for the info, please keep in touch, Haydock was one of my favourite camps and I saw a few in the 15 years I was in the RAF.

Cheers

For Alexisian,

Thanks for rapid reply. Unfortunately, my wife and I are no longer an item but her maiden name was Gwen Nicholas. She left Haydock and was posted to Freckelton. She also worked in the General Office with myself. Time has certainly dimmed my memory 'cos I can't recall many people from the camp at all. If that photo is posted it may help me to recognise somebody. It wouls also be good if the photo of Pam Smith were also posted. I would forward it to my ex wife whom I'm sure will appreciate it.

I do recall a WRAF Fg Off in the HQ. She was scottish I think.

I also remember a WRAF called Liptrot who was a local girl and went home every night.

Do you recall the girl in the Spiders Web club called Sylvia ?. She came from North Wales ?.

I can't recall the raid on the mens accommodation, but there was many a good time had in the female block as well !.

Anyway, it's good to talk with you, please keep in touch.

Cheers

I was in the General Office/Families office until I was posted to Rheidahlen in Nov 63. My wife also worked in the office and was quite paly with Pam Smith, I also remember the Mullen girl, but I left shortly after she arrived. I do recall Flt Lt Symondson (tall fellow) and also the CO. Do you recall a guy called Gerry Scotlan, he came from Bolton and was a telegraphist ?.

Anyway, nice to talk, let me know if any other names spring to mind. There was WO Nash in charge of the stores across the square and Flt Lt Fleet ?, the families Officer.

Cocker,

Yes, that's the guy I recall. I used to play snooker with him a lot, he was a fairly good guy for somebody working with the SWO !.

A pity you don't remember any of the names I gave you, mind you after 47 years, it's little wonder !.

I eventually married one of the WRAFs I met at Haydock, unfortunately our marriage broke down 15 years later and I'm now married to a local girl for the past 25 years. I probably should never have married an English girl in the 1st place !.

We were last in Cyprus last year. We stayed in Limassol, but that town is getting more commercialised by the day. I see that the Turks are beginning to open up the north end of the island a fair bit. I think that they realise that, without the tourists, ther isn't much economic future for them.

The Paralimni area and Protoras area seem to be attracting a good few Brits these days. Paphos is very expensive, probably down to the tourists !.

I certainly intend to spend a few months each year somewhere in Cyprus when I retire. I will then be in a better position to decide whether or not we'd like to move over permanently. The weather certainly seems to have hotted up a lot since I was there with the RAF.

Any Cocker, once again it's great to talk with you, feel free to reply anytime.

Regards

Jimbo
