Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Can you read the witness name?
« on: Monday 20 February 17 21:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I'm struggling with deciphering the name of the first witness to this marriage.
The groom is Robert Handle, the bride is Betty Bussell, and they were married by banns 1st Feb 1780 in Pitminster, Somerset.
I can make out the second witness name as Willierm [sic] Summerhaye or Summerhays.
However the first name is puzzling me... Something like "Genarhouse Marks Handle"???

Thanks in advance for a fresh pair of eyes!

I know, this is my issue!! :D

Thanks so much for looking into this and for linking me to the digital scans of the Pevensey registers :)

Sillgen, thank you for your help as well :)

Hi Rootschatters,

Hope you've all had a lovely bank holiday weekend :)

I'm trying to find more information about the family of Mary WHENHAM (or Wenham) who married Samuel ELPHICK in Pevensey, 20 May 1760.

There's a baptism record for Mary WENHAM in Pevensey, 6 Oct 1737, with parents William and Mary.

There are other baptisms for the children of William and Mary... However I think there was more than one William Wenham in town, so I might be getting a bit tangled...

1726 - Mary (*died 1729)
1737 - Mary
1735 - Jane (*died 1738)
1740 - Jane
1742 - William (*died 1752)
1745 - John

These were all in Pevensey. I'd expect a marriage record for William & Mary around 1726 but haven't yet found it. Can anyone help me track that down?

Thank you!

Hi all,

I'm having trouble tracking down a marriage record for my GGGG grandparents Ann and William Cheal.

They lived in Seaford and I've found 9 children baptised at St. Leonard's between 1808 and 1827 to William and Ann Cheal(e). Most of these list William as a shoemaker/cordwainer.

The earliest baptism is Edward Cheal, 10 Feb 1808. So from that I'd expect a marriage in Seaford around 1807. I'm drawing a blank, though  :-\

As well as the date & place of marriage I'd love to find out Ann's maiden name. I've found her listed as Ann Unstead (Unsted / Hunstead) on public trees but without any sources to back that up, which is why I'm trying to double check!

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Are the witnesses related to the bride or groom

Not as far as I'm aware - no Howie or Joisce in my tree so far!

Happy Easter, Rootschatters!

I'm trying to find out more about my great-great grandmother Mary Riley and am at a bit of a dead-end. I'm trying to pin down records of her birth and death, as well as information on her parents.

I have the certificate of her marriage to my great-great grandfather Thomas Soulsby, which took place at St Mary's Church in the Parish of Horton on 18 May 1885. (Witnesses George Matthew Howie and Jane Alice Joisce)

Her father is listed as John Riley, labourer.

She's on the census as Mary Anne Soulsby with her husband Thomas in 1891 (in Newcastle), 1891(in Washington) and 1901 (in Chester-le-Street). Her place of birth is recorded as Houghton-le-Spring each time and her age would put her year of birth at 1862/1863.

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

Brilliant, thanks Trish!
I was having a look at this family yesterday so some of the info you posted ties in with things I'd found, plus some new facts I hadn't come across :)

Burials on FreeREG Barrow;
Dorcas 1853
William Snr 1853
William Jnr 1853
Dorcas/William noted as Daug/Son of William

Oh no, how tragic!
