Thank you for your advice.  I have looked through the Army Regiments on the National Army Museum's website (Never realised there were so many!) and have come across five that were in Corsica at the time.  I will have to look into them at the National Archives.

It is also a good idea to look at the two Broughton marriages in Broughton Astley.  I will go to Wigston Magna next month - thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the advice re the discharge paper - I will try the muster rolls.

Thanks again

I have just found out I am also descended from this lady and would also love to know more about why the family should have been in Corsica.

I was wondering if anyone could please tell me if there could be any other reason they were in Corsica besides the father possibly being in the military.

I have been unable to find any Broughton's on the Chelsea discharge papers who would have been discharged at around this time period.  I have also found a John Broughton who served in the Navy, but as he was a Captain I think it is very unlikely that he could have been her father.

Thanks

I was wondering if someone could please check the marriage of Robert Naylor and Hannah Parkin on 18 Jun 1828 in Whitgift and tell me who the witnesses were.  Thanks very much

Thank you for all your help - I'm not sure whether the witnesses fit in to my tree, but really appreciate you looking them up for me

Hi Kerryn

The parents of James Hutchins McJannett were John McJannett and Mary Hutchins.  The IGI states they married in Narborough on 10th November 1801

It is great to hear from you Mick

I have also hit a brick wall - I also suspect that your John and my Thomas were brothers, but have also been unable to prove it :-[

Do you know who the witnesses to John or Thomas's marriages were please?  I only have the record from the IGI and haven't been able to check the original records.

I'm afraid I can't help you with William's papers but I do have a copy of Thomas's discharge papers if you would like to see them. :)

Interesting about George - his baptism date would indeed fit in very nicely between John in abt 1782 and Thomas in abt 1788.

The PRO is short for the The Public Record Office.  They are based in Kew.

They do however have a website.  Address is http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

They have access to all the Censuses released online via www.ancestry.co.uk, although you need to pay a subscription to access this particular site.

I normally go to 'search the archives' on the National Archives site.  It brings up a list of what is available on the site.  There are the PCC Wills online, but although the initial search is free, to download a will a fee is charged.

Hope this helps

Hi

If you look on the IGI, you will find that John and Mary did indeed have a daughter Jane, but that she was indexed on the IGI under Tennett.  She was born on 3rd February 1816.

John and Mary also had the following children (All baptised in Narborough):-

Ann Jennett                         18/11/1802
William Mackqennet             30/6/1805
John Tennett                         3/7/1808
Mary Jennett                         1//7/1810
John Tennett                       1/9/2/1813
Elizabeth Jannett                  8/8/1820
James Hutchins Jannett     22/2/1823

Do not know where Mackqennet came from!! ;D

If you look on the PRO's Site (Now the National Archives), you will find that William was in the Army.  He served in the 13th Dragoons, and was discharged aged 34, in about 1839/40.
