Yes I have William Dunlop's death cert of 1877 at Sorn Castle,  but was he buried with his first wife or second wife and where are they all buried - Helen Rankin: all I have for her is birth abt 1809/1811 Dundonald, at that Time Irvine/Troon came under the Parish of Dundonald. Hellen as the spelling was 1841 census at Kiln Knowe cottage Sorn.  1851 Helen is still alive and still living at Sorn Cottage, you wouldn't think it would be hard to find a death or burial within a short space of time between 1851-1858

I have been searching for weeks for a death/and or burial for Helen Rankin/or Rankine wife of William Dunlop who died 1877 he remarried 1858 to Mary Wallace, I can't find his burial either or that of his second wife Mary Wallace who died 1900 at Sorn - William was a Gamekeeper at Sorn Castle, so I presumed they all would be buried at Sorn Churchyard - hope someone can help

Lanarkshire / Re: 1841/1851/1861 census lookup- Ann Scott, born 1797 Glasgow
« on: Tuesday 10 April 18 11:32 BST (UK)  »
Hello Sophie, I hope you don't mind me contacting you, but I'm researching the Scott family on Ancestry, my tree is Ellis family tree

I have been unable to find Gavin Scott' wife Elizabeth Allan's death, I am sure she died between 1871 and 1877, the last date being her youngest son Robert's death, but where she died is a mystery, I have thought that she must have moved to live with one of her married daughters, maybe in England

Ann Scott, single person the sister of Gavin Scott, left a will and she died 1 August 1881 at 388 Duke Street Glasgow - her parents were William Scott and Janet Cunningham, I have no information on this couple other than Ann's birth which was 26 June 1797

this is the 1871 census for Ann
248 Gallowgate
Registration Number 644/4 Registration district Calton

Ann Scott 73 annuitant  born Glasgow
Isabella Stirling 77
Isabella Scott 24

Census 1881  644/3
388 Duke St Glasgow St John Dennistoun RD

James Hart 42
Janette Hart 41
William James Hart 13
Gavin Scott Hart 12
Annie Hart  9
Archibald Dewar Hart  7
Mary Lyle Hart  6
George Paterson Hart  5
Janette Hart  1
Ann Scott 83 aunt  annuitant b Glasgow

I hope this helps , - I have still a lot to look for with this family - it started with James Miller who comes down this line through his mother, James committed suicide in 1956, like wise William scott also died by Hanging in1886

Just to let you all know that because we found the grave, I then found Janet's death cert and also her fathers.  Janet's came under Mrs Smith her married name, they lived in Kirkconnel for a lot of their married life:

September 1847 -
Mrs Smith from the Parish of Kirkconnel died of fever while on a visit -  20th... 25th September

Her father:
1845
Scott: Mr Scott, father of Mrs Mitchell. of apoplexy the 1st buried 7th May ...84yrs

Mrs Mitchell was Janet's sister (Elizabeth Clare (known as Betsy) Scott; married name Mitchell

Thanks everyone for all the help with finding information

The Headstone Inscription I think goes like this (up to Janet)

To the memory of William Scott
late Farmer in Glenkiln
in the Shire of Dumfries
who departed this life on 2nd of May
1845
in the 84th year of his age
and
Mary Blake his spouse
who died on 10th Dec.
1837
aged 70 years
and
Janet the eldest daughter in the family
who departed this life on the 21st of September
1847
in the 57th year of her age

correct, about Andrew Scott, he was also the Factor, I think it would be him that erected the gravestone, as his father is at the top 1845, then his mother 1837, followed by his sister Janet 1847 and nephew, then his brother-in-law - I can't make it all out, if I lived nearer I would visit the graveyard.

The Andrew Mitchell mentioned was a Distiller.

I also find it odd that Andrew's wife was not buried beside him (Elizabeth Clare (Betsy) Scott) married name Mitchell - she died 27/12/1890-Port Gower Place, Edinburgh, and the informant was her nephew Andrew Scott residing at 40 Leamington Terrace, Edinburgh, I have him born 1830 and no death, a marriage to a Catherine which I cannot find; I am sure he with what I have found that he was an Indigo Planter in Calcutta - he was retired at 50yrs in 1901 he was living at Ventnor Hampshire.

So I have 2 sisters, Janet and Elizabeth not buried with their husbands - odd
