Cornwall / Re: Stephen Paul Tonkin 1842-1904

Yes, Benjamin J. Tonkin (1873-1941) is the son of  Stephen P. and Sarah. Born in U.S.
The Benj. born in England 1873 may well be related, but not Stephen's son or brother.
Benjamin F. is another story (?). As indicated, it's a common enough Tonkin name, Benjamin, which doesn't always help.
Thanks for your help, hanus and trish
*Btw ... I know I'm connected to Stephen Paul Tonkin because of DNA matches with descendants of his. Finding the link i proving elusive.

Hello and thanks, hanus teulu,

There may well be a connection. Will follow up and see what I can find.

Benjamin is a Tonkin name which recurs, so maybe.

Cornwall / Stephen Paul Tonkin 1842-1904

Looks to have been born in Cornwall, possibly St. Agnes.
I am trying to find his connection with other lines of the Tonkin family (mine) in Cornwall.
No luck in finding who were his parents, how many siblings. His life in the U.S. is fairly well documented. Married Sarah Williams, had several children.
Any help would be appreciated.

She married William Cornelius Quinlan. They lived in the Launceston area. Marriage details are sketchy. No reliable death record.

Large family: most died young. Adults moved to Melb.
Mary Bridget, born 1856 (my 2x g.grandmother). Moved to Melb.
Honora, born 1857
Cornelius, 1858-63
Jeremiah,  1859-69
Dennis 1862-62
Margaret 1863 -1915 Moved to Melb.
William Cornelius 1865-1935 Moved to Melb.
John James born 1858. Looks to have moved to Melb.

An enigmatic family, to say the least.

wivenhoe: my apology: statement should have read ...."Parents may possibly be Jeremiah McDonnell and Bridget Neehan", based on perusal of other family trees which may well be connected.
Not a certainty by any means. Best guess.

It hadn't occurred to me that the "brother" reference may not be taken 100% literally. Very sensible observation. That changes things considerably ,and rightly so.

Many thanks.

giblet: I can't read the writing much more than that  her brother Patrick was transported as well. That's really all I know about him. Parents Jeremiah McDonnell and Bridget Neehan, both Irish. Thanks for your help.

Tree Spirit: this one is a definite possibility, but does the Sentence commuted to one year imprisonment refer to after being transported? Thanks.

ShaunJ: is also possible. I'm struggling to read the writing. Will print it off and try a magnifying glass ... see how I go. Thanks.

Mentioned in the convict record of his sister Margaret McDonnell, who was tried at Drodhega, Ireland and was transported on the "Arabian" in 1847 to Van Diemen's land. I am presuming that he was there also, since VDL records know about him in 1847.

I am having trouble finding anything on Patrick McDonnell in Tasmania.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks, ShaunJ and Wexflyer.

This is a very creditable record indeed, and its surfacing is a great thrill for the Johnston family, one for which we are extremely grateful.
