Thanks again Alan, sadly the images are fragmented so I’ll hunt them out on FindMyPast, so thanks for the heads up

Thanks Amondg…I’ll have to look into that but it is called into question by Boo’s post so needs delving into.

Boo, thank you for that.  I obtained the 1780 burial from PR transcripts at the church itself where it only gave Mr Tallentire.  I was unable to locate it on familysearch so thank you for the link.  Clearly the same person.  By the way, it’s not the first time I’ve found discrepancies between the BT and PR (or transcripts thereof) but I’d say that info seals Anthony’s fate. Lol.

Sadly it doesn’t appear St John’s Chapel church has any family MIs.  From what I can see Find a Grave have largely used burial transcripts for St John’s Chapel which unfortunately falsely raises expectations.

Thanks Alan.  I’d missed the records where he was a witness or the marriage bond. As it happens his wife was a Brumwell so that’d fit in nicely.  The masculine spelling of Francis was via a transcription as I haven’t seen a PR for that one.  I’m assuming Anthony’s father was a John but have no evidence to support it yet.  I’m also a bit in two minds about Anthony’s standing.  The marriage states he’s a “Gentleman” that newspaper quote you sent suggests he’s a school master but at the burial there is an “m” after the entry which I thought might have indicated a miner although it could just as well indicated master I suppose.  Then again occupations can change with circumstances.  I’ve not been able to find a good fit in Northumberland, Teesdale, or the Cumbrian end of the dale for his baptism as yet,

Thank you very much for all the info and suggestions, I appreciate it tremendously.

Hi, I’m descended from Anthony Tallentire 1714-1780 and Elizabeth Brumwell 1722-1775 but am struggling with the Tallentires in particular.  I can’t find a baptism for Anthony but in the marriage bond it states he’s from Stanhope parish and Elizabeth is from Gateshead.  They married at Gateshead but the children were baptised at Stanhope with my 4x great grandmother (Jane Tallentire 1761-1820) being baptised at St John’s Chapel (a chapel of ease for Stanhope so the others may have been baptised there too).  Anthony’s burial at St Johns Chapel states he lived at Westgate.  Anthony and Elizabeth had seven children; Anne, Elizabeth, Dorothy, Francis, Jane, John and Mary.

Any suggestions will be gratefully received

Thank you Monica.  Very helpful info.  Yes Margaret and her line are very elusive.

Thank you for the amount of work you have done Carole but yes, I do have the right James Allison and Margaret.

Margaret’s surname is given as Dewer in the Kilwinning marriage and also in the baptisms of their children (in Kilwinning) and also in Agnes’ marriage in Bailliestone in 1857.  I was also able to find the Dalry marriage on 12 Sept 1823 you mention and you’re right in that there is no surname for the bride.  I wonder if it’s possible that both ceremonies could be for the same couple in separate churches for some reason?

All the census entries I found for James (1851, 1861, 1871) have him born Kilwinning although he’s moved around a bit and the 1841 doesn’t allow for a specific birthplace.

The couple had two daughters called Agnes as the first died in infancy and the name was recycled for the one you found Rosie, (thanks to you too for the work you’ve put in) which was my 2xgreat grandmother.  The reason I give the date ranges for Margaret Dewar’s death is that their last child was born in 1843 but she is absent from subsequent censuses, however, she is not described as deceased at Agnes’ marriage in 1857.

Thanks for pointing that out Neale.  You are of course right… I shall have to amend that straight away.

In view of what you directed me to Neale I’m revising Margaret Dewar’s date of death to 1843-1851 as James is a widower in the 1851 census.  Thank you!

Hi,
When my 3x great grandparents married in Kilwinning on 13 Sept 1823 the OPR states my 3x great grandfather James Allison 1803-1875 a cotton weaver was described as of Kilwinning and his bride Margaret Dewar c1804-died between 1843-1859 (also given as Duart in some documents).  Try as I might I can’t find any trace of her baptism or family in Dalry.  Nor have I found any conclusive death for her.  I believe I have found James’ death in the Cunningham Combination Poor House, Irvine District.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Alan, John Thomas’ grandfather was my 2x great grandfather’s brother.  I wonder how the young lad came to have his accident?  I suspect it had something to do with riding the tubs
