Yes they were Scottish, from East Lothian / Berwickshire boundary. I have a lot of history about the Horsburgh Family. No doubt they could have been a relation of some kind to the Horsburgh Photographer you mention as many of the family settled In the Lothians, and still are.

Thanks everyone for your input dating these two photos. They were originally uploaded to Ancestry by descendants of the supposed couple. Unfortunately I have been unable to track down the person who first put them on as this may discover photographer details and anything written on the back of the original image, if indeed it was an original and not a copy from somewhere else, George

Can anyone date approximately these two photo's Attached. They are supposedly of my 3 times great grandparent's and taken in the 1840's. I doubt very much if it is so and think myself that the time period is more like the 1880's or even later still

Hi, I have in the family Liddle Nairn born Mordington, next parish to Ayton in 1808. Have no idea why this Christian name came to be in the family, but suspect it may have been the surname of a relative some where along the line. Possible new area of research if I can work it out!

Thanks for the update on your family. According to tree information we are 4th cousins, happy to know it.

I will keep watching this post, I would just love to find out the mystery of Andrew Nairn and Kathrine Tod. I wrote a booklet many years ago which is in the Scottish Record Office, here is an excerpt as two attachments, let me know if you can view

Been checking the family out. I have added what I found to my tree. Interesting that James Nairn Cowans went to Canada with his daughter Jane Ann, the rest of the family stayed behind, and think I am right in saying they left 6th May 1911, the ship log has only the two of them listed. Sad James wife died young and also Elizabeth the wife of Thomas. These were hard times for all concerned, but without them going through life's ups and downs none of us would be here.

Thanks for all your information, keep in touch

Okay I can tell you that Andrew Cowens wife Christian Nairn was sister to my G.G. Grandfather. Not the family I was thinking off, but I do have Andrew Cowens and family in my tree. No knowledge of Thomas Oliver Cowens, was he their son? Had a quick look at the Census records for him his wife Elizabeth and Lily but not found, can you help locate.

Also in my tree is a James Nairn married Elizabeth Maughan 1897, Woodhorn, Northumberland. This couple are also related to us.

Baptism shows he was lawful son, perhaps I should be looking for a marriage, but over the many years trying to locate this or other mention of Andrew Nairn and Katharine Tod nothing has come of it.

Yes Barbara, this couple are very elusive indeed as I have only one record of them in 1769 Ayton, Berwickshire and that is with over 40 years trying to work out why that should be. Perhaps and I have come to the conclusion Andrew Nairn and maybe also Kathrine came from Fife to have James their child christened away from another family either of them may have had in Fife.
Are you descended from the Nairn family through the Maughan surname? I have some information on that connection.
