Australia / Re: Death by Poison Covered Up?

David, that research was pivotal to my own searching, as were the relevant pages from the book that you refer to. That book has since been updated and a new edition published.  A community forum called Advance Sea Lake Inc. is selling the book. For my own part, I have written a fictionalised biography of Christiana Whitfield’s life which may be of interest to some. It’s called Mrs Maydwell’s Coffee Palace and is available on Amazon as an ebook or paperback or through booksellers (ISBN 978191767347). I have credited rootschat and you, David, in the acknowledgements and I thank you all again here.

I beg your pardon. It must have been the death certificate that said 40.  After all, it would have been clear from the girl’s appearance that she was not 40!
I thought the Vernon false name was random and anyway didn’t know why it was needed. The Tasmania thread shows her mother farmed there briefly under that name.  The point I’m trying to make - not very effectively - is that the handed down story has been substantiated in several ways thanks to the rootschat expert researchers I think.

Recently some new info came to light via another thread that has a bearing on this. The inquest refers to a woman named Christina Vernon aged 40.  This was off putting - wrong surname, wrong age - but she gave her next of kin as Maydwell in Sea Lake which was a clincher.  In a thread called More from Tasmania ( or similar) Ranolki (?) asked about Vernons in Tasmania and it all fits. I’m in Egypt and working on my phone. Will send more.

Durham / Freeholder's Homes/Cottages c.1911

Hi,
Some ancestors of mine give their address on the 1911 census as "Freeholders' Homes, Crook".
I didn't know what this was and struggled to find out.  My sister found some relevant information relating to a development in Darlington https://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/library/browse/issue.xhtml?recordId=1116958&recordType=GreyLitSeries
but I wondered if anyone could shed any more light on the Crook angle?  The three inhabitants of the property were siblings in their twenties.  I undertsand she scheme was designed to extend home ownership to wider group but still...?
Thanks in advance for any replies...RootsChat experts have helped me many times.

Hi, is it possible to locate the above digitally or do you have to physically go to a record office?  Any assistance with this query very gratefully received.
Thanks, Jo

World War One / Re: DLI in Guernsey?

Hi Ranolki,  Patsy [Alfred Jonathan] was sent to Guernsey to a convalescent hospital during WW1 24 Aug 1917.  He had been kicked by a horse earlier in the war and was troubled with his knee.  This is in his military record on FindMyPast.  Hope this helps.

Good morning,
Sorry to have been away for a few days over Christmas.  Sincere thanks to Jorose for the will information regarding Irene.  She lived on for a further six years after Newton's death and was clearly well provided for.  I am sure your theory about the Trust is correct - keep the funds in the family!
I am indebted to Sparrett for the painstaking research about the travel.  I know Isaiah Oldbury sometimes travelled as John Wilson and this is even the name on his death certificate!
One definitive date I have is when Basil Oldbury [I'Anson] was admitted to Phillpstown school - 3rd July 1905 - earlier than I'd supposed they'd be set up in NZ.
The reference to travelling under the name Whitfield is interesting as that is the maiden name of the eloping mother [Christiana].  Thanks again guys.  I will mark the topic complete.  Best wishes for 2024
