The best resource is the South African national archives online. I've used that extensively to search from abroad. But, alas, I can't find Moses anywhere there? You may need to use a researcher?

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Name Changes 1800's

Hi everyone!
This is interesting because I have a name change in the 1830's for my ancestors, whose whole family changed from plain old Quintin to St.Quintin. They were Quintin on the 1830 census and St. Quintin from 1840 census.
Does anyone know if official paperwork was required? I can't seem to find anything at the archives.
They were well to do, and it seems they did it for status.
Thanks in advance

Hi Amanda/SGJ.
I think the Alfred LOW you mention is my great grandfather. Alfred LOW married Martha Paulina BECKING, however she died in 1905. They had many (8 from memory) children, including my grandmother Ann Thornton LOW, who I believe was the youngest.
Did Alfred remarry after Martha died, as it appears he died in 1947?
I'd love any information you may like to share about David Ireland LOW and his immediate family.
I'd also love to be in contact with descendants as my father was orphaned when Ann died in 1940 of "natural causes" aged 37. Interestingly he was never adopted or at least taken in by family.
Thanks in advance
Mooneen
