Just got the death certificate for Louisa Jane. The poor girl died of alcoholism and bronchitis at the age of 31. So the monster drove her to drink. She died the same year as her horrible ex husband. Just shows that money does not equal happiness.

WOWZA. Thanks for the info. Did you manage to get a copy of it? Thats a bad way to go. Poor girl. Thanks for your record searches.

Could you send me that photograph of John Nicholson. Do you have one of Louisa? I imagine her to be small and delicate.

Alan

No problem. Unfortunately i only have one of him and his father. PM me your email and i will send them to you.

John Nicholson's will is lodged with the archives at Carlisle. I shall go and have a look at it next week and report back with anything interesting.

Thank you  so so much. This will mean so much not only to me but to my aunty. She is following this and is the gate keeper to all our family history. All her info stopped just before the nicholsons so this will help.

May be bit of a stretch but i have my 5th great grandpa (and some other relations after him) name Thomas Westray from that area. He had a son named Thomas too. they name has an A not an E though.

Name   Thomas Westray
Birth   Abt. 1737
Death   29 Aug 1812

Possible his father was named Thomas who would of been born around then. The spellings can change over time or sometimes be translated wrong. If you need any info let me know.

Hi there, send me a Private Message with your email address and I shall send an invite to the tree. Payment is the satisfaction of thinking that you know more than someone else and can help them. However, the benefit of Rootschat is that you soon find that you know less than someone else and that they are wiling to help you.

Alan

Will do thanks.

John Nicholson died in 1866, Then Louise Jane married another named
William Elliot Patterson but no dates for that yet(presume after Leonard).

That was in 1889-

Marriages Mar 1889
Collins    Louisa Jane        Cockermouth    10b   797
Pattinson    William Elliot        Cockermouth    10b   797

quickly followed by-

Deaths Jun 1889
PATTINSON    Louisa Jane    31    Wigton    10b   329

:(

Wowza, Died a few months after marriage? Thanks for the info. Will find the records. She would be my 3rd great Aunty. Means my records are messed up as i have death in 1915 (i think). Would anyone know how to find the info on how the Nicholsons came to head the house. Could they of bought it or would it be through blood or marriage.

This is very interesting. The 1861 census has John Nicholson as the head of Ewanrigg Hall. His daughter was Louisa Jane who had the great misfortune of meeting and marrying one of my ancestors, Leonard Chambers Collins. He treated her very badly, conned her out of her inheritance and left the family destitute. They were divorced and he died in a Wormwood Scrubs prison where he was serving 10 years hard labour. John Nicholson wa the proprietor of a coal mine. They are not living there in 1871, I think by then he had died.

This does not help your search but it just shows that it is a small world.

Hi there. I should be very interested to see what you know about Louise as she is the poor girl who married my ancestor. What happened to her after the divorce. Did she re-marry.

Many thanks
Alan

Will have a look for you later  8)
