Gidday stranger!!!! :D  I haven't heard from you for a while Mick so it's nice to see you posting to MY query! ;D  After reading your post I'm thinking I should've posted the census information I was given, maybe someone has access to it and can provide me with ALL the information, so I'll paste it below.  I'm not 100% sure of details but I think it's from the 1851 in Northumberland.  It makes sense cause this is John ARMSTRONG and Dorothy WAUGH I'm talking about here Mick.  No, I still haven't found them ... sigh!!

I DID, however, manage to find more children for Thomas ARMSTRONG and Esther STOBART, John's parents.  I'll have to email that to you direct, so you know where I am with this family.  I put them on the backburner when we couldn't find John and Dorothy's marriage in Gretna Green, I've only just picked it up again.  'Tis time I found answers and put this one to rest so I can get on with my Scottish lines! ;D

Here's the information I received from a lady in Australia, it IS the 1851 ...

"I decided to check some NBL 1851 census indexes on fiche, and found...

ARMSTRONG John 29, Dorothy 28, Thos 2, Elizabeth 2
folio 23, census piece   HO107/2416"

Maybe someone who's reading this will have access to the 1851 and be able to send me a copy of the image?  Here's hoping anyway! :D

Wow, thanks Helen! :D  I'll go surfing shortly and see what I can find.  I didn't think the NDFHS had name indexes but it's been a while since I looked at what they have.  I've been meaning to join for over a year, I guess now's the time! ;)

Northumberland / Census CDs and Name Indexes

I've been searching myself silly today trying to find information on Census CDs and name indexes for censuses and so far I'm not having much luck! :(  I'm primarily interested in the Northumberland area, along with Durham, Devon (I have the 1851/61 CDs, 61 isn't searchable by name though) and Gloucestershire.  I also already have the 1881 Census CDs.

Does anyone know where I can find/buy/search the 1841/1851/1861/1871 censuses by NAME rather than address please?  I don't mind paying for them if they're searchable by name, or if someone is planning on releasing a name index in the near future.  I just don't have the time to go through every census image trying to find my ancestors!

Any help would be very much appreciated! :D

I've now managed to find the emigration of Dorothy ARMSTRONG and children Elizabeth, Thomas and John in 1860 aboard the Empire of Peace.  I still haven't managed to find John ARMSTRONG's journey, so that one's becoming frustrating.  I DO, however, have the death certificates for both John ARMSTRONG and Thomas BYNON.  John had been in Victoria 21 years which means he arrived about 1855.  Thomas' certificate says "49 years in South Australia and Victoria" so it looks like he may have come via SA.  That would put his year of arrival at about 1850.

I've tried searching the PROV site but had not much luck finding either of them.  I've also searched various sites for Thomas since he may have come via SA but still no luck ... sigh!!

I'm not sure if you're from Australia or whether you know much of Australian history, but in 1850 wasn't SA considered part of Victoria?  If so, would any arrivals be on the PROV site or is there a SA one?  If you know the answer to this question I'd be eternally grateful for an answer! :)

I figure if I can find William's parents' emigration, I'm likely to find his and siblings as well.  No doubt I'll be proved wrong, but you just never know! ;D

Hi everyone :)

I have some updates to my post ...

A wonderful lady in England has found Elizabeth ARMSTRONG's birth for me ... woohoo!! :D  I've searched for 3 years for this woman and she turned up in Durham Northern, born 1848 to John ARMSTRONG and Dorothy WAUGH.  I still don't know when they emigrated to Australia either, but it would've been about the same time as William BYNON.  William and Elizabeth married in 1868 so they had to be in Australia then! ;D

William Edward BYNON was born in 1844 in Llanelly, Wales (the Carmarthen Llanelly, now spelt Llanelli just to confuse the issue! ;D).  I have his parents as previously stated as Thomas BYNON (born abt. 1822) and Ann EVANS (born abt. 1823).

I have been searching online for William and family in Wales and have found a possible baptism for father Thomas at St. Elli's in Llanelli ...

4 January 1824, Thomas BEYNON, parents William and Ann, b. 9-10-1822, Wern, Collier

If this IS my gggGrandfather then he also had a sister Margaret and brother William, all baptised on the same day.

On the same site I have a possible baptism for Ann EVANS, however, I'm not putting bets on this one because there were a lot of EVANS and EVAN baptisms, although this is the only one that was close.  I don't, however, know if that's where she came from ...

14 March 1824, Ann EVANS, parents Thomas and Mary, Wern writer.

I still need to find out how and when William and family migrated to Australia but I am now also looking for information on Elizabeth and family's migration.  Both families I feel would have travelled to Victoria since that's where they settled, although I'm not ruling out arriving in another state and travelling from there to Victoria.

Again, if anyone can help I would be eternally grateful!! :D

That's a good idea, thank you, I'll look into it!! :D  I haven't looked into her death certificate yet but I've emailed the Durham County Library asking for a list of census entries searchable by name.  They've come back with 2 entries that would most likely fit, however, neither are right.  They have the wrong parents ... sigh!!  I don't think she's going to be an easy one to find thanks to her name.  Oh the joys of genealogy!! ;D

Hi Kazza and Tullig :)

The only information I have is "Durham", nothing more than that I'm afraid which is why it's been so difficult to find her!  I think from memory (it's been a while since I worked on Elizabeth's line) that I've searched FreeBMD while I was transcribing for them and I've searched the IGI.  The IGI brought back so many hits for Elizabeth Armstrongs it wasn't funny!!  I remember there were a couple that were possibilities, but as you said Tullig, until I know the county she was in it's going to be very hard to find her!! :(

When I got the copy of her marriage certificate to my ggGrandfather and saw her parents' names on it I thought "Great, NOW I'll find her!!".  I've been doing this a long time, I shouldn't have been so naive!! lol  I think I need to check the census records like Kazza suggested but of course the problem is going to be which county ... sigh!!

Maybe one of you can answer a question for me ... the 1851 census for Durham, would that be like the Devon one? i.e. I have the Devon disc and it's searchable, not the actual images.  It would make it so much easier if it was, cause I could just do a search for her or her mother.  If it IS, I'll buy the CD!! ;D
