World War Two / Re: Soldiers Will

Soldiers were encouraged to make a will once they joined an operational unit, usually straight after completing their initial training. There was no compulsion. The Army provided simple forms* for the purpose and the rules for Army wills are much more flexible than ordinary wills. For example a soldier under 18 years of age can make a serviceman's will, but a civilian of the same age couldn't.

*Today the equivalent is called the MOD Form 106 and is used by all three services.

Thanks for that. He did do a will that was dated 1941, so I take it that was when he enlisted.

Would anyone know if a soldier in WW2 would make a will either when he joined up or was posted overseas? I am trying to establish the year he enlisted. He was Thomas Kellet and served in the 2nd Battalion East Lancs Regiment. He died in Burma in 1944. Many thanks as always.

Lancashire / Re: Richard Rigby Marriage Bolton Le Moors

Hi. I have recently come across a baptism for your Richard Rigby, 17 Feb 1800 at St Wilfrids RC Preston, son of Nicholas Rigby and Catherine, sponsors Jos Goodear and Mary Johnson. May I ask, have you done a DNA test? My maternal line is Rigby, and I believe this Nicholas Rigby was the brother of my 4xggf George Rigby. By the way, the son Richard b1846 Bolton, had mmn as Partington. Michaela

Whilst scrolling through the Baptisms at St Anne’s on Lancs opc I did notice a couple of entries that were similar, one saying ‘given to court’, and the relevant date.

Fast forward a few years, an update. Richard Rigby if Haighton did marry Helen Singleton. Evidence shows that Richards father was Nicholas Rigby, who died in 1773 in Fulwood, Preston. His father was Richard Rigby who died in Fulwood in 1708. He married Elizabeth Miller from Heskin, so the land records from Heskin fit in. That is where I come to a stop. I can find no marriage for them, but guesses are they married around 1690. Has anyone got any idea where I can go next? With his land acquired in Writington and his wife from Heskin, could he be from that area? I do know there were Rigby’s from Harrock Hall, but my Richard was only a husbandman. Any help will be greatly received. Many thanks

Lancashire / Re: Mary Green born abt 1848 Chorlton on Medlock

You really could be on to something here. You are right that the families did stick together. Where does your Green family fit in to this? Co Roscommon is an adjacent county to that of Longford. I have never found a conclusive bapt for my John Green born abt 1826 there. The family were living in a district of Manchester called ‘Little Ireland’, living conditions were horrendous. The area is well documented.

How interesting! Since my initial post I have found that my Catherine Mahon married John Green in Manchester 1844. Later in the 1881 England Census in Burnley, being a widower, he lists his birthplace as Longford. Catherine died in Bacup in 1874 age 44. This leads me to believe that the 1841 census in Manchester, my Catherine was the one aged 10.
