World War One / Re: WWI Medals

Sadly I don't have the oak leaf :-[  This is the way it came to me a few years ago after my aunt died.  Water damage could be right I suppose.  I guess I could get new ribbons.  Not sure how to put them on though.  Thanks for all your help - again.  I love this website.  Everyone is always so helpful and I have learned so much from the very generous members who give great advice.  It's been a very sad day and I've "welled up" a lot - especially after watching the BBC last night.

LEST WE FORGET.

Yes well it would be in a poor state as it's nearly 100 years old!  The medal says "Imp Ind" on it so I assume it means Imperial India.  Maybe it's green for that reason?

World War One / WWI Medals

I hope someone can help me please.  I have a set of miniature WWI medals belonging to my Great Uncle, John Ferguson, 2nd Lieutenant Royal Engineers and I am having trouble identifying one of them.  To my knowledge they are as follows:

The first is an MBE, the second is the WWI 1914-15 Star, the third is British WWI war medal, the fourth is the Victory medal and the fifth is 15 Star General Service medal with an Oak Leaf (apparently given for mention in dispatches). It also has an "Iraq" clasp.

Now please can someone tell me why the War Medal has a green strip instead of an orange one?  I've searched all over but can't find a similar one. I'm also attaching his medal card.  Thank you in advance.

Hi Victor

After your email I wracked my brains and then wondered if she had been buried in Surrey with her husband, James, who died in 1902.  This proved to be the case and I found her burial record in Richmond in the same grave as James.  Thanks again for your efforts and apologies for not using my brain earlier!

Kind regards

Fiona

Hi Victor

Thanks so much for your efforts.  I will contact the PCC and see what she has to say.  I suppose it it entirely possible that she was buried elsewhere as she was not originally from the Stroud/Stonehouse area.  It would have been nice to have "closed off" on Charlotte as she had a pretty eventful life that took her from Hampshire to Malta, India, London.  Her first husband married her bigamously in Malta, but that's another story.  Again, many thanks.

Regards

Fiona

Hi Victor

Thanks so much.  What other cemeteries are there around Stonehouse that I could check, just in case she's not buried at St Cyr's?

Regards

Fiona

Please can you help me to find my 2x Great Grandmother.  Her name was Charlotte Duncan and she lived in Stonehouse.  Her death in 1912 is given as Stroud.  I would like to find out where she is buried but I'm having no luck. I'd be grateful for your help.  Thanks.

Armed Forces / Re: James Larkin 6th Dragoons or Carabiniers

Ken, my great grandmother's name was Catherine, Katherine or Kate Larkin.  Her father was James Larkin.  The 1871 census has her birth as Ireland.  Her father was James Larkin who I have established was with the Carabiniers.  He was born in Garstang, so I have concluded that the Carabiniers were in Ireland when she was born.  I have looked through the regimental births on Findmypast but have found nothing.  Kate spent the rest of her life in India after marrying my great grandfather, John Ferguson/Fergusson.  Her father James received an Indian Mutiny medal and stayed on in Meerut after he left the army.
