Northumberland / Re: John Hannell IRVIN b. circa 1780
« on: Wednesday 14 August 24 10:15 BST (UK)  »
"Information I had been given said that the IRVINE family owned a fishing fleet and lived in Aberdeen, opposite a golf course.  This might be true of John Hennell IRVIN, son of the above Richard IRVIN, however, whether Barbara's father owned a fishing fleet, I don't know."

Not sure if you are still searching, or if this will help, or indeed if you have this already, however ...

My Granny was in service with Sir John Irvin (born North Shields 16/3/1874) in Aberdeen (86 Queen's Road) in 1922. He died in Aberdeen 25/3/1952 and is buried in Springbank Cemetery, Aberdeen, along with his wife Mary Boak, and daughter. From what I have gathered so far, he did have a fishing fleet in Aberdeen. The property is  or has been redeveloped as "luxury apartments" but I'm not sure about the golf course.

Can anyone help with the names of the witnesses on this baptism record for Elspeth Denoon, parents John Denoon and Janet James, in Moray 1716. I can make out Samuel James, John James and Elspeth Simson, but the others have defeated me. If any secretary hand experts out there can help, I'd be very grateful.

World War One / Cross of St George 4th Class
« on: Monday 08 January 24 12:31 GMT (UK)  »
I have recently found that a relative received the Cross of St George 4th Class (London Gazette 15 May 1917 Supplement). He served with the Seaforths and was killed in Iraq on 22 February 1917.

Can anyone help with information on the Cross of St George and why he might have received it? And any thoughts on why it was Gazetted after his death?

Thanks
