Thank you Ciderdrinker, that is amazing and I am wondering why they never came up in my ancestry searches.   ??? I have contacted the tree owners to see if this is the right chap, but I think you may have found him. Thanks so much,
Best wishes, Fleur

Hello, thank you for the excellent speedy responses, the ancestry UK tree is mine, and I put in information that I hope might throw up some more.  For example, I gave Isabella the Lonsdale surname as one of the witnesses at the baptism of her daughter was William Lonsdale. I thought he could have been a father/brother.  Sadly it didn't get me any further.
The death date referred to in the UK, Foreign and Overseas Registers of British Subjects 1627-1969 is for an Alexandro MacMaster (not Joseph Alexander) who was born in Belfast (I got my Italian neighbour to translate it for me). Again, I added it thinking it might link to something else, like a birth certificate in the Belfast registers, but with no luck, so it's probably not him.
So, still hoping there might be someone out there who will know something of my gg grandfather.
Thanks again for all your help.
Best wishes.

Family History Beginners Board / Joseph Alexander McMaster/Macmaster Family

Hello,
I am looking to find the parents of my great great grandfather Joseph Alexander Macmaster.  He was born around 1835 (my calculation) in Cape Town, South Africa (I think).
Joseph's spouse was Isabella East - this could be her full name, but I can find no marriage documents yet.
He is recorded at the baptism of his daughter Emily Lonsdale Macmaster on 22 July 1863 at St. George's Cathedral, Grahamstown with his wife, Isabella East.  Witnessing the baptism are William Lonsdale, Emily Mc Master and Louisa Mc Master.
He is listed as a merchant.
He is then recorded at the baptism of his second daughter, Agnes Mabel McMaster (b. 2 Oct 1865) on 15 Nov 1865 in Bangalore, India.
He is recorded again at the baptism of his third daughter Laura McMaster who was born, baptised and died on 31 July 1866.
Her mother, Isabella East McMaster died 3 days later on 3 Aug 1866, she was buried the next day in Bangalore, India.

I only discovered he was my gg grandfather when he was named in the divorce proceedings of my great great grandmother Katherine Louisa Osborn (nee Kensington) 1844-1922 and her husband William Lushington Osborn 1832-1912.  It seems that Joseph and Katherine had an affair while in India, this continued in the Isle of Man, UK and my great grandmother, May Osborn was born in France in May 1878.

His daughters by Isabella moved to the UK, both married there, but both died without issue.  Therefore I cannot find out anything through his legitimate descendants.

I have found a listing in The London Gazette of June 16, 1882 which says that: Pursuant to an Order of the High Court of Judicature at Madras, made on the 20th April 1882, in the matter of Joseph Alexander Mc Master, of Bangalore, Coffee Planter, a person of unsound mind, all person who are or who claim to be creditors of the said Joseph Alexander Mc Master, and persons claiming to be interested in his property, estate and effects are, in person, or by their attorneys, on or before the 1st day of August, 1882, to come in and prove their claims in Judges Chambers, in the said High Court of Judicature, at Madras, or in default thereof they will be peremptorily excluded from the benefit of the said Order. Tuesday, the 1st day of August, 1882, at eleven o'clock in the forenoon, at the said chambers, is appointed for hearing and adjudicating upon the said claims - Dated this 3rd day of May, 1882.  Barclay and Morgan, Attorneys for the Committees

I cannot find the court documents yet, nor have I found any record of his death.
I would be fascinated to hear from anyone who may know anything about Joseph Alexander Mc Master or his family.
Thank you, Fleur
