Family History Beginners Board / Families missing from the Census
« on: Monday 17 August 15 16:04 BST (UK)  »
I am puzzled why I find whole families in certain censuses, and they seem to be missing from others, same for individuals. I guess that searching for the name 'Smith' doesn't help, but I do have place and date of birth for most individuals. Is this a common occurence?

Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry vs FindMyPast

Just wondering what people thought of Ancestry vs FindMyPast? Later is cheaper and I found some census records featured on FamilySearch with an image available on FindMyPast but couldn't find the same records at all on Ancestry. It wasn't a one off, but several. Personal experiences would be welcome.

Thanks again.

Thanks Millie, will investigate as I'm not sure it's the right person, but thanks for your efforts! :)

yes, John Preston were his first names. Got a blank too, very odd.. I may go for the copy of the 1911 census for j f Milnes-Smith the 4 year old who appears on his own, so presumably the household he was in were named something else. It is available on Findmypast but my free subscription has expired and i already subscribe on Ancestry who don't have it strangely enough, but FamilySearch have it. i know that the parents died young and that the children were brought up by an aunt.

Hi thanks for the speedy reply. Her brother was john Preston and I don't know who her parents were. I am waiting for the birth certificate of her brother should arrive next week. Am after all censuses, I think that the name may have  been recorded either as 'Smith' or 'Milnes' or mispelt.
