Hi Corinne. To my knowledge Ethel left Windermere when her father and step mother died (she had to care for them both). I believe the step mother was also called Ethel and was unkind to Ethel and John Edward, so it was a hard life for Ethel. She corresponded with her cousin who was in the Merchant Navy, and eventually married him and moved to live in Wallsend, where she lived most I her adult life. Her husband died before Ethel and she spent her later years travelling worldwide, so it is possible she visited friends and family in Windermere. I know for a fact that she stayed with my grandparents regularly in Penrith. I now live in my birth place of Northallerton. My dad's younger brother David remained in Cumbria and his family all live in and around Carlisle. Where are you? How far back have you traced the Vickers family?

Ethel Rawling was the younger sister to my grandad John Edward Rawling (b1906 d2003). She outlived her brother by a few years and lived in Wallsend after marrying her cousin (also Rawling) after her father and step mother died. Ethel and John's mother Amy (nee Vickers) died circa 1910 in her early 40's from an asthma related illness. My grandad remembered being sent to get her medication from the chemist. I would very much like to trace Amy's family tree if anyone would like to share.
