Devon / Re: South Molton Union Workhouse

A2archives is usually a good source of information,  but a quick glance at south molton workhouse shows only 1 entry.......You could look at resettlement in the same source though.  Enter South Molton then plough through the results,   very enlightening.  Hope it's of some help

Looking for G/G/Grandfather,   Willliam BATHAM/BEATHEM a private in the 3rd Regiment of Footguards. I understand from Scots guards depot that he was a late addition to 2 Company and should have been at Waterloo.  His home was in Great Andrew St /St Giles in the fields.  Any help will be much appreciated

Armed Forces / Waterloo- help needed
« on: Monday 05 November 07 21:15 GMT (UK)  »
Am looking for gt/gt gfather William Beathem/Batham/Bathem, who was a Pte in 2 Bn in 1815/1816.  I've downloaded the Waterloo Rolls of 2 Bn  at Waterloo from TNA but he doesn't appear,  although Scots Guards  RHQ at Wellington Bks say that his name appears on THEIR list as being in 5 company at that time.   Does anyone know of any other source?  Any help will be much appreciated.

Bryant,
If you enter Notting Dale into  Google,  hit the first map , enlarge it then look just to the north of Holland Park Rd you will find Princes St. ... Potteries La is an extension.  Most of the old area was pulled down years ago,  and there were brickfields just to the east of the railway line.  An interesting site is the next one listed on Google,  it gives some of the history of the place.

 Thank you Catherine,
That was swift, and interestingly  ties up St Giles very nicely.  Food for more thought.    Much appreciated

Hello Bryant

Death Cert

Census 1851

Parish Kensington    Address  131 Potteries or Notting Dale.

William BATHAM  Head  66 Journeyman whitesmith born St Martins
Mary       ''     ''    Wife   56                                         ''      St Giles
George    ''    ''    Son    12  Assistant                        ''      Kensington
Edward   ''    ''    Son     ?       ''    ''                            ''         ''    ''

On my copy Edward's age is hard to read.

On marriage Cert of Edward  to Mary Harrington in 1858  his  father is shown as Christopher William Batham  Locksmith and Bellhanger.
On marriage Cert of Louisa Batham in 1854  resident in Potteries her father is shown as William Christopher  deceased.
Kensington....Potteries and Notting Dale are the same place.

For what it's worth , in the Westminster Polltax returns for 1796,  a William Batham  Locksmith of Peter Street is listed.  This is probably in the right area for  St Giles  and St Martins  origins of my William and Mary.

Devon / Matthias STEVENS North Molton
« on: Monday 02 July 07 17:42 BST (UK)  »
Does  anyone  have  a Matthias Stevens in their collection?   He was chr in  Bishops Nympton 1720,  then moved to North Molton ,  where he had  5 children between 1748 and 1763.  He died and was buried in N Molton in April  1767.   I need to know his wife's surname.   She was Anne,  but Anne who?  I can't find a marriage  on IGI for N Molton,  and when I was in the N Devon record office last week,  it was one of the things that got overlooked.

Any pointers would be welcomed.......................Jack B
