The Common Room / Sir William Dickson. 1898-1987
« on: Thursday 18 October 18 16:13 BST (UK)  »
To mark the centenary of the end of the First World War our local history group are remembering Sir William Dickson, who was born in Northwood Middlesex in 1898 and died in 1987. He was a Royal Naval Air Service aviator.
An RAF personnel estate in our area which was built in the 1950s named their roads after several WW1 pilots;  Tedder, Slessor, Salmond and Dickson. When the RAF left and the site was redeveloped Dickson Road ceased to exist while the other three remained. On Friday October 26th the park is to be renamed Dickson Park in his memory.  This renaming will be carried out by the Lord Mayor of York and representatives of the RAF.
If there are any relatives of Sir William Dickson who would like to attend please send me a personal message and I will give you details.
We have information about his life from Internet sites but any extra information or photos from Rootschatters researching his family would be much appreciated.
Many thanks.

The Common Room / Re: Demolition date
« on: Sunday 05 August 18 10:45 BST (UK)  »
Thanks '  adhadowey', I think we better call it a day on this query. It seems that my original question has many answers. The demolition was not part of planning permission for something else. The land was leased and has reverted to a field where horses graze. Newspapers have drawn a blank and so have locals so will contact the planning office this week. Can't contact local history group for information as I am a member and this building is part of the research we are doing.
Again thanks for all the suggestions, far more than I ever expected.
Thornwood.

Sorry, I didn't intend for this query to get so many people hot under the collar, must be the weather.
Thanks again

The Common Room / Demolition date
« on: Tuesday 31 July 18 20:43 BST (UK)  »
A property I am interested in was demolished at some point between 1973 and 1976. The local paper called for its demolition as it was an eyesore and dangerous but after trawling their archive between those dates I can find no article about it having actually been pulled down. Locals only seem to remember it going but not sure when exactly. Where can I find this information. Do people need planning permission for a demolition in the same way they need it for building?
Thanks for any help.

The Lighter Side / Re: WDYTYA - tiny gripe
« on: Tuesday 31 July 18 15:32 BST (UK)  »
For me this was the worst programme I've seen where assumptions were made with no documentation for evidence. There was no evidence that 4x great grandma (Caroline) had come from Madagascar as a slave, or that she was a wet nurse or that Isaac was her owner who had become so grateful to her  that he left her property in his will. Yet Shirley jumped on all these things as being true. And did I miss something but were we ever told who had fathered her children?
As for the other side of the family didn't the researcher say that the will had probably been written after  his wife had left him and the children, and that was why money had been left to his mother but then we're told G grandma was struggling to bring up the children so that was why she'd left them with her mother in law.
I'm not sure these women were as strong and moral as Shirley thinks they are!

Yorkshire (North Riding) / York brick making industry
« on: Sunday 22 July 18 19:51 BST (UK)  »
I have  just started researching the brick making industry in York, in particular the brick yards in the district of Acomb. If anyone out there can reccomend useful books or have memories of the yards and people who worked in them I would be very grateful.
Many thanks.  Thornwood
