Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: PICKETT - Witney, Cogges, Southleigh, Newland

Hi Les
Wow! Another marriage! I didn't have the Sara Ashton one!
I've send you a message with my email address. I'm happy to share what I have. I've also done an autosomal dna test - but that's not helping me with my Picketts as yet.
When we were in England a few years ago we stopped briefly in Witney for a look around and visited the little museum. Apart from being told that the Picketts lived in a pretty dire slum area I didn't get much more.
I retire at the end of the year, so hopefully I'll have more time to unravel the past.
Regards
Sue

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: PICKETT - Witney, Cogges, Southleigh, Newland

Hi
Thanks for your response :- )
I found William (b1831) in the 1841 (Shaw Alley, Witney) & 1851 (Newland, Cogges)censuses living with who I'm fairly sure were his parents  William (b. abt 1807 in Southleigh, & Rachel Pickett.
So I think the William born 20/10/1833 must be another William Pickett. I guess they must be related but as yet I'm not sure how.
Regards
Sue

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / PICKETT - Witney, Cogges, Southleigh, Newland
« on: Sunday 29 July 07 09:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello
Is anyone else researching PICKETT in Witney, Southleigh, Coggs, Newland?

I can't find census records for my Picketts in the 1861 or 1871 censuses. Does anyone have any suggestions?

My great grand parent William Pickett born 17 Jul 1831 according to a family bible. He emigrated to NZ in 1875. He appears on the 1851 census with his family as 19 yrs born in Cogges, living in Newland, Cogges; on the 1841 as 8 yrs living Shaws Alley, Witney.  He had 3 children to Louisa (unknown maiden name) She died 30 Apr 1872 Corn St, Witney aged 25. I can't locate a marriage record for them. They had 3 children William C Pickett b. 19 Sep 1861, Louisa (my grt grandmother) born Nov 1863, Elizabeth Pickett b. abt 1868, Clara Pickett who died aged 5 17 Nov 1872 at Corn St Witney.  He  married Eliza Cooper formerly Ham 17 Jun 1873 in Witney. They produced Alice Maud Pickett b Corn st, Witney 12 July 1874 before coming to NZ and having more children.
I've sent away for the birth cert for Harriet Louisa Pickett born 1863 in the hope that she is the right Louisa Pickett so that I can find out who her mother really was.
The information on the IGI is unhelpful and wrong.
I've tried searching the censuses using variants such as Picket/Puckett/Rickett etc.

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Sue

Hello snwbnnyinoz
I decend from John Robert NEELS' 2nd marriage. After Winifred died he married Louisa PICKETT.  Louisa had emigrated from Witney to NZ with some of her family in 1875. John Robert married Louisa 2 Oct 1886 in Morrinsville NZ.
Do you have any knowledge of the Neels in England? The Neels family appear to have moved around a bit I'm guessing following the father who was a Royal marine.
I'm happy to share any information that I may have that is useful to you. Including a fairly awful family photo of JR, Louisa and family including 2? children from his first marriage.

Cheers
Sue

Australia Lookups completed / Re: TASMANIA RESOURCES
« on: Monday 23 July 07 08:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'd just like to say a big thanks to those who have posted information on this list.
I first started reseaching my convict ancestors (William Gray on Katherine Stewart Forbes & Louisa Ellis on Angelina) 15 years ago but have only just started up again. In just an hour or so using the online sources suggested by this list I've added another 2 children to my convict family and I've also found both parents as paupers the Cornelian Bay Cemetery.  I'd had no idea that they had stayed on in Tasmania, family sources had suggested that they may have been living in Melbourne.
Thanks again
Sue
