The SGS is pleased to announce local historian, Alex Wood, will be joining us here in the library at 15 Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh, on Thursday 20 November at 6pm, to read from and answer any questions you may have about his latest book, Scottish B’stards, a history of illegitimacy in Scotland from the 18th to the 20th century. Anyone interested in attending this free event – refreshments and nibbles will be provided!

The National Library of Scotland and the Edinburgh Central Library have organised another Family History Fair & Conference in Edinburgh. This will take place at the Edinburgh Central Library, George Washington Browne Room, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, on Friday 24th October, starting at 10am. As well as tables manned by various local organisations (including the Scottish Genealogy Society), there’s a programme of talks (all with a military theme):

- Hippo Lane and Sword beach - Historic maps of the World Wars
- Post War Edinburgh
- Research and records using the CWGC Archives
- Researching British Prisoners of War 1914-1919 and 1939-1946

The Scottish Genealogy Society has a new six-week Zoom Programme for Beginners beginning on 25 September 2025. Tutored by Ken Nisbet, you will look at the sources that are available both online and offline on how to start researching your Scottish family history. The course is priced at £50; classes will all take place on Thursdays at 7pm, last for about two hours, and include time for a Q&A session. To book:

The final item on our syllabus for 2024 is a talk by Margaret Fox, Archivist, on “The Servants in Traquair House – What the Archives tell us about their lives” on Monday 18 November at 7.30pm. As usual this will be held at the Augustine United Church, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh and is free to members. Non-members are welcome to attend for a small donation.
