Hi there....I'm not sure if your Ggrandfather is related as the Edwin (Hobbs?-)Chapman in my family tree was born in Stanford Dingley in Berkshire.  Here is the info from the 1851 census:

Stanford Dingley Dist 6
HO107/1691  FOLIO 146  PAGE 3

Joseph HOBBS, Head, 31, Journeyman Tanner
Hannah HOBBS, Wife, 41,  , b Pewsey Wilts
Henry HOBBS, Son, 4
Charles HOBBS, Son, 2
Ann HOBBS, Daur, 11m
Thomas CHAPMAN, Stepson, 15, Blacksmith
Marth CHAPMAN, Stepdaur, 12
Albert CHAPMAN, Stepson, 10
Edwin CHAPMAN, Stepson, 8

This would make Edwin Chapman's birth year as 1843 and his father was George Chapman.  George Chapman died and then Hannah his wife remarried, Joseph Hobbs.  They went on to have 3 children together.  There is a small chance that Edwin took the Hobbs with Chapman as his own since he is the youngest of the Chapman children however I haven't researched him in later census records to confirm this.

I would suggest you obtain a copy of your Ggrandad's birth certificate as this will confirm the facts either way.

Good luck, regards
Katie

Hello Chris ....luck would have it I saw my email and I just had to respond!!

Yes Hannah is my great, great, great, great, great grandmother (I might have added an extra 'great' there but I don't have the details to hand). Either way we are definitely related.  I'm obviously on the Chapman side but I know that Hannah remarried to Joseph Hobbs after George Chapman died.  It is interesting to see that your great, great grandfather Henry Hobbs lived with my G.G.G.G grandfather and my G.G.G. grandfather in 1861.

Do you still live in or near Reading as I do?  Did you ever know of the Chapman connection or do you recall your grandfather knowing any of them?  I would be interested to know more about your family tree too.

Berkshire / Re: BAKER/FORD Marriage - Please Help
« on: Wednesday 25 October 06 23:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've just changed my post as I've realised I made a huge mistake and was searching for a Frederick James Chapman when it should have been Baker.  Been searching Chapmans on the other side of the family for so long I made an error.  Sorry for any confusion and thanks for your advice about searching at the records office in Reading - I plan a trip there sometime soon!

Berkshire / BAKER/FORD Marriage - Please Help
« on: Monday 02 October 06 22:15 BST (UK)  »
Help. I've been searching the BMD's for a marriage between Frederick James Baker & Elsie May Ford (my gg Grandparents).

I don't have a date but my Grandma was born in 1922 and according to her birth certificate her parents, Frederick & Elsie were married and living in Mount St, Reading.  I've tried searching back from this date (10yrs so far) looking at both their first & middle names, both surnames but so far I've found nothing.

I am fairly confident that they are Reading born & bred so can any help?

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Re: Birth record - Doris Baker
« on: Sunday 06 August 06 20:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi Tanja

Thanks for the link - I've been using ancestory all afternoon but got a bit lost on the site as been searching the marriage section and then deaths section for ages.  When I tried to go back to the births I couldn't find the right search option.  It's been long day and I've been searching so many records I think I need a break!

As for the Maurice - I think it's the wrong person as he should be older not younger than my nan (according to my Dad).  The other one Stan doesn't link in either but is about the right year.  It's so frustrating as they must be there somewhere.

The only info I have is:

Maisie (oldest), Mod (aka Maurice), Fred, Doris Winifred? (b. 7/8/1922) Betty, Stan (youngest)

Doris Winifred? Baker dad is Frederick James Baker.

I've searched marriage records from 1922 back to 1905 but none tie up with Ford and only other maiden names I have are Green and Williams.

I've tried finding death certs for Doris Winifred's siblings but could only find the two I've told you about.

What information is on the death certificate? Does it give the mother's details?

Any other ideas on what I could do now would be gratefully received!

Tanja

Is it possible for you to do a quick check on a Stanley Baker born 7 June 1928?

If the maiden name is also Ford then this is probably my nan's brother.

Another brother could be Maurice George D Baker born 21 Aug 1925? Again finding the ref and maiden name could esablish the connection to Doris/Winifred Baker.

Cheers

Katie

Thanks Tanja.

I will let you know if it turns out to be the right one.

Just one thing, can you help decipher the reference - I think it is 2 o 693

Cheers for your help, much appreciated.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Birth record - Doris Baker
« on: Sunday 06 August 06 12:31 BST (UK)  »
Could anyone please help me find the birth record for a Doris Winifred Baker born 7/8/1922? (this was my nan)

I've searched for ages but just can't find it.  I have her death record - she died as Doris Winifred Chapman aged 74 (Henley Berks) Reg 28B Entry 290.

What I really want to know is her mother's maiden name so was trying to locate her entry in the registers so that I could request her birth certificate.

Her father's name was Frederick James Baker and she grew up in Reading, Berkshire.

Any help would be gratefully received as have spent so long searching but to no success.

Thanks Katie

Berkshire Lookup Requests / 1841 look up James Chapman
« on: Tuesday 06 December 05 22:00 GMT (UK)  »
Please can someone look up James Chapman (age 61) and James Chapman s/o (age 19) in 1841 census. Could be living in or near Stanford Dingley.  Already know about Charles Chapman & George Chapman (James' brother's aged 45 & 43) living there. Would also be interested if there are any other Chapman's in that area?

Thanks
