Country ship is the term applied to the ships that traded in the East Indies - they picked up goods and took them to entrepots where the EIC purchased them. They were restricted from sailing directly to England.  The captains were known as free mariners as they had no connection with the EIC.

If you think he was a captain in the East Indies Company then check out Google Books for A Register of Ships, Employed in the Service of the Honorable the United East India Company, from the Year 1760 to 1819, with an Appendix: Containing a Variety of Particulars and Useful Information, Interesting to Those Concerned with East India Commerce by Hardy. These are free to download and give the names of the commander, a few of the mates and purser.

The Common Room / Legal Term - East Indies will "severally attained"
« on: Monday 16 October 17 23:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I am currently looking at a will dated 1794 in Penang (part of British India and under the jurisdiction of the EIC). There were several children and I am interested in finding out exactly what the following bit means "to be distributed by my executors on their severally attaining the age of 16 years and previous to that period such part of the principal and interest of this bequest to be applied towards their maintenance and education as the executors may see fit."

Does severally attained mean as each turned 16 or the estate was distributed once all had turned 16???

Other Countries / Re: James Scott Penang and his descendents

Hi David,

I hadn't realised that there was still something remaining of Scott's house on the hill. I must have a look next time I get to Penang. I spent two years living in Penang at the beginning of the 1980's and have been back a couple of times to see the changes!

I haven't found a grandson named Phillip as yet - while I am tracing Scott's family tree, my real interest is because he is the subject of my PhD thesis.
I have contacted the PHT previously but there is little that I don't already have and I am lucky that another person Roger Scott Lewis is researching Scott as well. He spends some time in Pg each year and cleans Scott's grave.

Thank you for your message. The descendents of Scott are elusive.

Hello Winston

I only have basic information on this line - my focus is James Scott and his immediate family as that is the focus of my PhD.

Cheers

Other Countries / James Scott Penang and his descendents

Hi everyone

I am trying to locate the family of James Scott b 1 Oct 1746 and baptised 6 Oct 1745 at Westmuirdean.  James was the son of William Scott and Barbara Makdougal.

Siblings include:
Walter b 1745
Robert b 1748
Mary b 1750
George b 1752
William b 1754
Barbara b 1761

James is the first cousin, once removed of Sir Walter Scott   He served in the navy during the Seven Years War and then later went to the East Indies as a "country trader".  He lived on the island of Phuket (Junk Ceylon) and Penang (Prince of Wales Island).  His uncle Robert had been a Captain with the East India Company. One son William became harbour master and postmaster in Singapore, while another son Robert settled in Java. Other members of the family lived on the Malaysian peninsula until recent times.

I am interested in James Scott for historical research and would like to find out more about the other members of his family

Any assistance greatly appreciated

Channel Islands Lookup Requests / Re: elizabeth ball - alderney

Address for 1871 Census should be Platte Saline :). I'm assuming that you are certain of her birthdate so if that is the case this appears to be her in the 1881 Census:

Name: Elizabeth Ball
Age: 29
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1852
Relation: Servant (Head) (Servant)
Gender: Female
Where born: Alderney, Guernsey, Channel Islands

Civil Parish: Kensington
County/Island: London
Country: England

Street address: 12 Sheffield Gdns
Education:
Occupation: Cook

Registration district: Kensington
Sub registration district: Kensington Town
ED, institution, or vessel: 9a

Household Members: Name Age
Elizabeth Ball 29
Maggie Lewis 24

My guess is that perhaps her father was on Alderney either in the military or to do with the construction of the breakwater at the time of her birth.

The Common Room / Re: Is Patty short for anything?
« on: Sunday 06 August 06 10:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi Nicky

I have a bit of information on the Pierre Herivel and Elizabeth Queripel line.  Elizabeth died in 1836 but I have no death date for Pierre.  One thing that is puzzling with this family is that I have 3 other children listed:

Eliza b  abt 1815 who married James Woolcock Whicker in 1835 and emigrated to South Australia in 1854
James b abt 1816 and died in 1835
Charlotte b abt 1818 and married John Berry and then there's around an 18 year gap until Marthe!  I have always wondered whether Marthe was the child of Eliza or Charlotte rather than Elizabeth and Pierre.

Best wishes

Hi

I was interested in your post on Patty Herivel as I also spotted her in the 1841 census and cannot find out anything more about her or where she fits into the wider Herivel family!

Best wishes
