Armed Forces / Cant find RAF man- can You help?
« on: Friday 27 October 06 21:33 BST (UK)  »
Ive been to see a relative today who happend to have a couple of Edwardian related medals. One was the Jubilee medal from 1897 and the other was the British war medal of the first world war. Imprinted along the potside were the following details

196717 Pte 2 G.T Doy RAF

I assume this would be Thomas George Doy my Great granddad who i believed to be working on the fishing fleets off the north eastcoast. Not only this he was only 15 when the war started. If this is him his service was never mentioned which further complicates the search.

I cant find any trace of him on the national archives site and was hoping someone with some fresh eyes might be able to double check for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou

Will

« on: Tuesday 03 October 06 19:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone
I have in my possesion a scroll presented to my great grandfather Arthur George Hopkins. it was presented to him on the 15th of september 1925 for saving the life of a drowning women on the 12th of august of the same year, off the coast of scarborough. I was wondering if such an action would have made the national papers? If so how would I go about searching them?

any advice would be appreciated.

cheers

Thanks for verifying that Ambly. Its nice to think it was maybe a family buisness. ive heard that coalmen not only were important in the victorian age but were also respected and liked so thanks for confirming this. is there any indication the family had anymore children previous to Eliza on the earlier cenusus? the family is big but to the standards of the day doesnt seem as many as i thought.

Thanks for your help again.

Hi again.
I believe she was born around 1897. Her fathers name was John Alfred Slater.
apparently the family was very large with many children., which I have kind of confirmed as she seems to have had 4 sisters and 2 brothers.

sorry about the vagueness.

thanks for your help.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Lizzie Slater and family- census
« on: Friday 29 September 06 20:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone
Ive recently had a talk with my mum about here own grandmother Lizzie Slater of Scarborough. Ive managed to find the family using ancestry but theres a few questions that someone I hope might be able to help with. the first is that Lizzie's father used to be a coalman delivering all over scarborough she apparently spoke of this alot among other stories I was hoping someone might be able to confirm this by use of the census.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Will
