Somerset / Re: Can anyone tell me where Northwick is?
« on: Monday 12 October 09 13:31 BST (UK)  »
Just to throw a possible spanner in the works - there is also a North Wick on the southern outskirts of Bristol, between East Dundry and Norton Hawkfield.

There is also a Northwick in South Gloucestershire too - when I used to live very near the former (just a small collection of houses, no church), 4 young men in a limousine stopped to ask my neighbour for directions to get to the North Wick church! They were running late for a wedding, but unfortunately should have been in South Gloucestershire...

Gloucestershire / Re: Newland House - 1881 & now

It is still there today - presumably as a private house. If you fancy some bedtime reading (!) on Newland House, try this link  http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.asp?compid=23260

It's a rather wordy page on Newland village, but there are several mentions of Newland House and a pencil sketch of the house itself.

Hi Mary

It appears that Winstanley St is no more - for old photo and info,

Somerset / Re: Hill and Jenkins Families of Redcliffe
« on: Wednesday 18 July 07 08:52 BST (UK)  »
Hi Francis

There is an area in the centre of Bristol called Redcliffe, around the harbour and St Mary Redcliffe Church - might be worth trying this area.

More info on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redcliffe,_Bristol

Good luck.

Hi Abby

SPROD is a great name to search for!! Try this link to the Clevedon Civic Society - lots of SPROD names in their records, covering the nearby villages inc Yatton/Kenn/Kingston Seymour etc

Roxburghshire / Re: "Vanishing" Elliot family
« on: Tuesday 22 August 06 12:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi Clare

I know we have corresponded before about your Elliot connections - have you thought of posting details on the boards for emigrants to Australia and New Zealand?

My Waughs pretty much all ended up in NZ in the late 1800's,and I know a lot of families from Roxburghshire ended up out there, especially around the southern part of the South Island (naming one town Roxburgh, funnily enough ;D).

Might be worth a try...

Pam

Hi Adrian

Sidcot School is a Quaker school which has apparently been going since 1700-ish.

Their website www.sidcot.org.uk might give you more info.

Berwickshire / Re: SMITH/BROWN !! Chirnside, Cockburnspath 1800-1860
« on: Monday 06 March 06 08:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Gillian

Thanks for the message - I'm still rather in the dark about these BROWN ancestors, but there may well be a tie-up somewhere especially given the overlap in locations - Cockburnspath, Chirnside, Edrom etc.

I will file your info away - the SMITH/BROWN file is one I've tended to put to one side while concentrating on the "easier" names  ;D

Many thanks again for the info.

Pam
