Firstly please accept my sympathy on the loss of your dad.

My late husband also did National Service in Egypt from 1952 to 1954. I applied for and received a medal for him only last year. From memory I think it was for those who had served in the Canal Zone and is a fairly recent entitlement.

I have to go out at the moment but I can look out the details for you later on if you like.

Dorrie

Now that sounds more like it! And the years sound right too - thank you i would be interested in anything you have x

It will be the General Service Medal, awarded to all who served in various troubles, such as Cyprus and Northern Ireland etc.

Initially there was no award for Suez, it took nearly fifty years for that to be resolved, I think it was about 2003 when it was decided that medals should be awarded for Suez.

Google UK General Service Medal for images of the medal.

Thank you, he was not involved in anything, just served his time. I have not seen the medal, but just wondered what it would have been for as apparently it was not given till some years later, and as far as i know he would not have got it for anything

I lost my Dad in Jan this year, and was kept apart from him for a good few years by the woman he married - anyway - my question is.....
I know his name, date of birth and that he did National Service and was in Egypt in the signals and came home just before the suez crisis.
Aparently he got a medal years after, i do not know what it is, as i knew nothing about it, and have only just been told it exists. any ideas out there???

Don't panic! - take it one step at a time.

The 1913 birth registration Rosie found looks good, so unless anyone can find a baptism which would name the parents, the next step would be to buy a copy of his birth certificate.

I think Gladys is a red herring and not related.

Oh bless you  ;D yes I like what Rosie did there, helped alot. Where would I start with finding baptism?

Right then - firstly thank you ALL for this information.
It seems to me that some of these names need to be ignored as they are not gelling together, some I think could belong to me, the others not, I have got to try and weed out the right ones.  I have been given different names of his parents, arghhhh lol, too much information, overload!!!! Dont know what to do with it. ???

Did Gladys die on her first ever ride on a motorcycle?

Gladys Whittle, 17, of 104 Exeter Road, Nottingham, who died in the General Hospital on Sunday from injuries received in motor-cycling

July 1934

I have no idea on this, i only knew my Grandfather had a sister we called Em.  Everybody died young, I was given this name by someone in an earlier post, how do I find out if this is a relative??
