:) Also apologies for bringing this back to life! My wifes G.G.Grandfather CHARLES ASTON was also in the 25th
He was a sergeant.
Working from census returns and the birthplaces of his children his movements where very roughly..

ATHLONE, IRELAND 1863 - 1865 ish  his wife Ann was also born in Athlone

MONTREAL, CANADA 1866

PAISLEY, SCOTLAND 1868

1869 ALDERSHOTT

1871 FAREHAM

1874 CAMDEN FORT, CORK

1877 YORK.

I know this is all just based on births, but would be interested to know if it matches other forum members ancestors movements with the 25th!

Cheers,
Boris

:) Thanks guys! great info! Still getting my head around it, I'm starting to think that Thomas McCairns may have married twice, or we are looking at 2 different Thomas Mccairns here! I have him marrying 'Catherine[a] Atterby in 1896 she could have died and James Atterby McCairns could have been named in memory of her? hmmmm, found a Thomas Mccaions [mistranscribed] on 1901, a proffesional Footballer that ties in well...... Anyone have access to 1901 that could help or does this new info shed anymore light?

 Thanks,
    Boris.

Hi Boris,
Although I'm not researching the Atterbys myself I do know that Atterby can often be mistranscribed as Atterly. (Witness Thomas Atterly on the GRO Index in Sep Q 1851.
Hi,
Thanks for the input Pam, and yes i have already been down that avenue when searching for Benjamins brother Richard Atterby he was found in 1901 at Mansfield transcribed as Allerby and so many other variants have also turned up that i keep a list of poss variations handy for when searching!
 But thanks again!
 Boris.
