Hi Knellie,
Are you still researching this family? I have a family connection and lots of info.
Emily/Adelaide/Jane/Charles were children of Miss Elizabeth Sophia Grey, of a Nottinghamshire gentry family (at Ruddington House), who eloped with her teenage manservant William Henson, and her Aunt Jane (who had all the money) initially cut Elizabeth out of her will for marrying beneath her!

Let me know if you want more of the story!

Regards,
Jim W.

Latest findings from the online records - and a happy ending!

Two young people on an island together, Maggie Gibb and Peter Hogg, working for his uncle James (Peter being the son of James' unmarried sister Helen) - not many opportunities to meet others - so guess what happened next?

Yes, they married on 18th June 1903, Maggie and Peter, both "of Cramond Island".

Thanks to you both for helpful replies.
I found the 'Wikipedia' article on Cramond Island which says:

"Towards the centre of the island, half-hidden by a small wood there is the ruin of a stone-built farmstead. It appears on an Ordnance Survey map of 1853, but may be considerably older. It was occupied until the 1930s and sheep were still kept on the island as late as the 1960s."

 - plus there is a photo of the ruined farmhouse; I presume this is where the Hoggs and Maggie Gibb lived (the Hoggs were there in 1881 and 1891 too).

Regards,
Jim

Regarding the "no messages" thing, this confused me too, but I reckon "replies" are not the same as "messages", so you can get a reply without it being classed as a message, even though when you write a reply the box says "message" at the side. Clear as mud?

Midlothian / Cramond Island - census 1901 (3 people!)
« on: Tuesday 13 May 08 16:37 BST (UK)  »
Found my great-grandmother's sister Maggie Gibb on the Cramond Island census for 1901, it appears she is one of only 3 people.

James Hogg 59  Head - Farmer
Peter Hogg 29 nephew - Assistant farmer
Margaret A Gibb 21 Housekeeper
Cramond Island

Can this be right, or were there others on the island (apart from sheep)?

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: 1861 census - ISAAC lookup

Hi Joy

Sarah (Marion Hood) was the daughter of George (the coal-dealer) and Mary, as 'SandraC' found above. I researched this family because Sarah's brother Charles Isaac is lodging with a Margaret Robinson in Hull on the 1881 census, who is in my family tree. Margaret's daughter was singer/actress Lillian Cavalier, who was my GGGG aunt. Like 'Marion' she lived in Hull in her early years and was in music-hall and later at the Gaiety theatre, London, among other theatres. I think it's likely they started on the stage about the same time.
Another famous name is lodging with Sarah (look for 'Marion Isaac') in the 1871 census - Kate Candelin, whose stage name was Kate Vaughan.

Regards,
Jim
