Carlow / Re: Tobin / Hilliard, Carlow

Lol David,  No offence taken.   I grew up in the area and am a proud Laois woman ;) ;) ;).   The Tobins were neighbours of my fathers family in Sleaty Street.   Several of the Tobins went to New York, and I have reconnected with one of the family in recent years.   The Graigue triangle is probably more complex than the Bermuda triangle - citizens living in the Carlow section claiming they are from Laois and citizens in the Laois section claiming they are from Carlow.     ;D ;D ;D   But we all have a 'sense of place' and wherever we want to identify with is fine.  It is great for the banter at local gatherings, isn't it??

Hi David,   I think the Tobin families from Graignamangh and Graiguecullen would have been separate families.  You are correct that both villages used Graigue as a shortened version of their name, but Graignamanagh is 25 miles from Carlow town, but Graiguecullen is a suburb, on the Laois border.  There was a family of Tobins in Sleaty Street in Graiguecullen around the 1900s, so it is more likely that they are Tobin family that Mary Anne Hilliard married into.

Mary Anne and Edward Hilliard were my great grandmother Katherine Hilliards siblings.   I have a photo of Edward but not Mary Anne.   The Hilliards were from the Green Lane area of Carlow, father Joseph Hilliard, a cooper, and their mother was  Mary Doyle from Shillelagh.
Joseph died at his daughter Katherines home in Green Lane.  Katherine was married to Michael Corcoran and their youngest son Michael was my grandfather.  I have the full history of Kate and Michaels family and a little on the Hilliards.

The Lighter Side / Re: Heir raising moment -spooky or what ?!?

Lol Claire, as I said, I feel no negative energy in my home, but there is a childish spirit here. Things are moved sometimes, and in my sons original bedroom where he used to chat to his "friend", no matter how often I tidy the room, and straighten the bed covers, it looks like someone has just sat on the bed.

We moved into our house that was built in a cleared area known by older neighbours as the "Old Oak Woods" When I was pregnant, both myself, my husband and my mother and aunt heard a baby crying in the house.  We were a little spooked. When my son was about 3 weeks old, we had visitors sitting in the living area. My son was in his cradle beside us but his baby monitor was still connected in his bedroom.  We all heard a baby cry from his room even though he was asleep in front of us.   When my son was less than three, he talked to us about Jack who played with him in his room. Jack was the naughty one who made all the mess. We asked him to describe him, which he did, along with his sister Sukie, brothers Mallie and Greg.  He would look at me and say, "can you not see him Mum?".  To this day I am still unsure if he had an imaginary friend or something more.  He is now 18 and we chat about it sometimes but he doesn't remember it.   On the positive side, there has never been a scary energy in our house, BUT, lots of shadows moving in the hallways.  I see them regularly, and it doesn't bother me, but it has spooked a few babysitters over the years.

Thank you Hallmark and Merseult.

It is interesting that the marriage record says Naas which would be Edwards parish. My information was that they had married in Graiguecullen in Carlow, which was Julia's parish.  I still do not know how they met.  He was 53 and she was 23 when they married.

The census return is very helpful, I will check that out when I get home. Do you know if there is a charge to view it on RootsIreland?

Thanks a million for all your help.

Thank you, Keyboard86.
I am searching from outside the  UK, and do not have a link to the free bdm site.
Could you possibly share it?
Thanks a million
